If you haven't finalized your dive plans for the summer, Save Our Leatherback Operation (SOLO), a non profit organization, has several last minute cancellations on 11 day liveaboard expeditons. Currently there are 5 openings on Expediton 1 (15 - 25 July) and 1 opening (for a female I believe) on Expedition 2 (17 July - 6 Aug). Travel originates in Sorong, Papua. The trips begin a with couple of dives enroute to the turtle beaches. One evening/night will be spent on the turtle beach with the nesting turtles as they dig their nest and lay their eggs. The following day we return to the beach to interact with the full time staff. More than likely we will see the hatched turtles dig their way out of the nests and return to the ocean. After leaving the turtle beach, we will resume our diving in some of the finest diving sites in the World - the Raja Ampats. This is a first class operation with individual A/C and showers in each stateroom. Vessel is 110' with a max of 14 divers. The cost is $2600 which is IRS deductilbe (as well as all related intransit costs).
PS Perhaps you read about the Leatherback Turtle that was in the news a couple of months ago. The turtle was fitted with a transmitter on the beach that we will visit. It traveled some 13000 miles across the Pacific to Central America, up the Pacific coast to Oregon and over to Hawaii where the transmitter finally failed.
