It's my fav fish to eat and I love to angle. Now that I dive, I would like to try my hand at spearing them.

My question, as a lay person to the sport, what would my ideal tool be for the job?

Smaller the better.

Do I go for a pole or a gun?

Thanks guys.

I use both a pole spear and a gun. Bass are usually suspended so I use a wooden abbiller 32. I use it for bass, walleye, drum, carp, etc...

I like to use my pole spear for catfish that are laid up in the rocks, caves, and logs. That way I'm not concerned about messing up my shaft.

The good thing is that pole spears are super cheap so you can have both.

I used a Ranger Pneumatic for years and loved it. But I know prefer the simplistic band guns... preferably wood.

Our season starts June 15th but I'll be in the Gulf chasing snapper; )

Word to the wise: Check with local laws before you shoot, as many states and provinces prohibit the taking of "sport fish" on anything except hook and line.
