I am trying to decide on a digital camera to get, it would not soley be for underwater photography, but that is something i am taking into account, the problem i am having at the moment is the nikon 5400 and 5700 are apparantly superior to the c5050 and have quite a bit more semi-pro functionality, but the c5050 comes with a decent low priced housing from olympus itself, i have found no such accessory from nikon

can anyone comment on the housings available for the nikon 5400 / 5700 vs the c5050 housings

thanks in advance :)

just had a look at the specs for the camera.

basically the same camera functions, but a little faster.

but then it is also £300 more expensive and a housing is £900 from camerasunderwater, because it would be one of the specialist housings.

plus the internal flash would be rendered useless, so you would have to buy a strobe to use it from the start.

at least with the 5050 you could use the internal flash to start until your bank balance recovered :)

is the cost really worth it?

Well for the saving I would make on the housing i could get the Coolpix 5400 for above water and the c5050 w/housing for underwater and general always in the pocket use :)

the underwater housings about 150 quid i think
:)

Why buy both cameras? If I'm reading this right, the CP5400 for land use and the C-5050 for u/w AND land use, can keep in your pocket.

Both Nikon and Olympus cameras are very good. My first digital was a Nikon CP880 but the housing was so expensive when I decided to go digital for u/w, that I bought the Oly C-4040. The Oly is easier to use in general. The Nikon has a VERY slight edge on macro shots. In fact I have to have them side by side to tell the difference. From my experience with both the brands, although not the exact models you mention, I'd suggest you go with the Oly C-5050 and use it for both land and u/w. I don't think you'll regret it.

I'm sorry if I am not familiar with your currency but I just bought the c5050 on line for 500.00 and my lds got me the Ikelite housing for it for 520.00. As far as the cameras go I also looked at both but the oly was a bit more affordable. My opinion is the difference is negligable, they are both great. As far as the housings go, I chose the ikelite for three reasons. First, price, 520.00, features depth to 200ft and will hold buttons while scrowling through features and upgradability ie strobes etc. There are three available, oly's own, rated to 130 ft at about half the cost and lite and motions which is approx. 1,000.00 or more. The ikelite is middle of the road. I have heard the oly housing is a bit delicate which made me nervous but again its talk. The upgradability of the oly housing is limited. I believe it is the pt015. It also seems to be intergalactically backordered. The light and motion is completely out of price range. I have no info on its performance as I picked up the housing yesterday. The ikelite hosuing is a bit clunky but functions nice, we'll see. Please note this garbled mess is not knocking anything, just info based upon what I did and found out.
