What's the future for advanced compact cameras in underwater photography?

The key strength of having wet lenses and being able to do wide and macro seems to be fading away with larger sensor and brighter lenses

Also some of the new housings and camera are pretty much same price than an ilc set up

Where do we go from here??

In 5 years, there will be DSLR/Video systems, micro 4/3 and phones. The phone has killed P&S for the most part.

That is certainly true as cameras kill camcorders but what am alluding too is also the newer larger sensor compacts and their challenges for underwater shooters
