SHADOW DIVERS EXPOSED: The Real Saga of the U-869
ISBN 1-883056-24-1, softcover with color covers, 380 pages, 1 chart, 4 scans, 2 illustrations. $25
The U-869 was one of more than 1,200 U-boats that were constructed for the Nazi war machine. It was sunk off the American eastern seaboard by a combination hedgehog and depth-charge attack. There were no survivors to tell the tragic tale.
Now, for the first time, the real saga of the U-869 can be told in full. Archival documents have established that the U-boat was sunk by two American destroyer escorts. Seven crewmembers of those aggressive warships have supplemented the official record with their personal recollections.
Shadow Divers Exposed works on a multitude of levels. It presents the actual circumstances that surrounded the loss of the U-869. It puts the discovery of the U-869 into perspective with other U-boats that have been found in American waters. It provides an overview of the U-boat war through accounts of other U-boat losses. And it corrects some of the gross errors, wild exaggerations, and deliberate distortions that filled the pages of Shadow Divers.
The author interviewed a number of witnesses whose testimony contradicted the theatrical plot and boastful embellishments that formed the essential ingredients of Shadow Divers. Some of these witnesses actually performed the deeds for which the chosen protagonists of Shadow Divers were given credit. These witnesses disputed many of the fictitious elements that ran rampant through the pages of Shadow Divers.
By means of forensic analyses of shipwreck collapse, torpedo mechanics, and U-boat survivors’ accounts, the present volume explains why the U-869 could not have been sunk by a circular run of its own torpedo - as Shadow Divers had its uninformed readers believe.
Saying that "...It presents the actual circumstances that surrounded the loss of the U-869..." is such a strongt statement that it pretty much kills the credability of the author. If he had said "there is another theory that fits the observed facts" then I'd listen. For example if there was actually a record of a US warship attaking a U-boat at that exact location then I'd think that it would be more likely the u-boat was destroyed by the warship then by it's own torpedo but still we could never know for sure. So to say you KNOW the actual facts kind of destroy credibility
In the Shadow divers book the people did check and found no report of a warship attacing a sub at that location. They looked hard but found nothing and so had to asume an circle running torpedo. Of course looking but not finding a report is not proof that no attack occured.
Read both books and draw your own conclusions. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between. It does appear that there were many more individuals who played a significant role in the discovery and identification of the sub who did not receive credit.

Nicely said, and I agree.
As I continue to dive the wrecks in the NE and meet more and more of the great divers
out there.. It's interesting to hear and learn about some of the great divers that were
involved w/ this stuff and not mentioned alot. Each having a little more to add about the
whole story.

well... the story in Shadow Divers is about C and K. that doesn't mean that the story of the U-Who is JUST C and K.
just means that they told their story, from their perspective. i just find that perspective a lot less bitter and venemous than Gentile's perspective, which seems designed to denigrate anything C and K ever did.
being left out of somebody else's story is not unusual. going out of your way to trash somebody else's story *IS* imho, a big deal, especially when the "hoax" basically boils down to editorial choices in putting Shadow DIvers together.
for example, if Gentile had recovered the tag and C and K took credit for that, that's a big deal.
or if Gentile had recovered the knife and C and K had taken credit for it. that's a big deal.
none of that happened. it's much ado about nothing.
