Today I saw a firmware update came out in June of 2013 for the Nautilus Lifeline. Among other things, I noticed a "Buried Treasure Mode." Has anyone tried using attaching a Lifeline to a reel and sending it to the surface to mark under water objects? If so, how accurate were the GPS readings?

And, are you supposed to open it up and turn it on at depth? Isn't that a no-no per the manual? But if you don't open it up, it won't turn on and won't record and GPS position. Right?

It's very important not to open the lid at depth!! Only at the surface.

The beauty of treasure hunting mode is that you can turn the unit on before your dive and it will stay on from 1/2 to 3 hours depending on what you select. Normally, the unit times off after 5 minutes unless it's in distress mode.

so.... you can do your dive and choose to send your LifeLine to the surface - LID CLOSED!! - where it should log a gps event within 5 minutes. GPS reception is not perfect through the polycarbonate lid but we got solid results and data logging during our field testing.

We came up with this idea to help log position of a number of the shipwrecks we regularly dive in British Columbia and Alaska on the Nautilus Swell. It worked so we thought "hey, maybe other people want to do the same thing"..
