What's the deal with shops not being able to tell you when tanks will be back from Hydro.
This is more of a pain than scuba snobs and LDS's that make an issue of internet purchases.
Waiting on tanks to be hydro'd for 5-6 weeks is @#$@$#@.

If you know where the tanks go locally for the hydro, assuming that the shop isn't doing it themselves, you should be able to go work directly with that company. My wife works for a company that sells and maintains fire extinguishers and they commonly get subcontracted by the scuba shops to do the hydros.
Check with local welding supply stores. Many 'fill plants' do hydro's. I had my Luxfer AL hydro'ed, O2 cleaned and air-filled. It was back in four days and it was cheap compared to a dive shop.

When I got my tank hydro'd it took one week but he says he can do it in a day if I give him notice next time and pick it up after a day of diving. Cost $35 (28USD) and included an O2 clean and was returned to me with a fill. So not bad. But it still is annoying that hydrostatic testing is required annually in Australia if you want to get fills at shops. And they are very thorough in checking the stamps.

The local welding shop, Monroe Welding, has a unit that does nothing but hyrdo's. They do all the fire extinguisher, welding gas cylinders, fire department cylinders and scuba tanks for most folks in this area.
If you drop your tanks off it costs less than $15 a tank. If they have to come by the dive shop and pick up it runs $30. Sometimes it will take a day or other times up to two weeks depending on the backlog of other customer's cylinders.
