I think mine would violate ToS so I won't state my favourite compliment.

The other one I like is when my partner tells me I am beautiful. Simple compliment, and I have heard it a lot but I like it and it doesn't get old.

Back in the day, I spent 2 or 3 days a week in court. When I left to move on to another career, one of the most feared and revered defense attorneys in town - the kind that would make witnesses break down on the stand - came up to me at my going away party and told me that he had worked with me for 6 years and had never filed an appeal in any of the child protection cases I had been involved in as he felt I had always treated his clients fairly and with respect and had always ensured they received every opportunity they were entitled to - even in cases where I terminated parental rights. Coming from him that was a real compliment.

It would appear to the casual observer to be the case. However, I'm hear to tell you, it's not the case at all.

I was walking down St. Paul Street in Baltimore with my buddy and a car slowed down to keep pace with us. My buddy--considerably less enlightened then I--said, "Look at these fags checking us out." I grew up in NYC, so being "checked out" by men wasn't that foreign an experience for me, and hey, a compliment is a compliment. I shrugged. The car pulled over and the guys jumped out, approached us, and said to me, "We're making a movie and you'd be perfect for the lead character." I was pretty cynical, even then, and had pretty much seen it all, so I responded, "Thanks, I don't want to be in your $#%^&* porn flick, pal." Well, the guy produced a business card for a production company, took my number and promised to call. I'm still not sure whether our initial assessment was correct because they never called, but I did have an inflated opinion of myself for a while thereafter, and to this day I prefer to think that I just missed the call that would have launched me to movie stardom.

I was walking down the street with my parents in Marbella on Christmas and I look over and see this cute young guy driving by looking at me so I smiled at him. Next thing I hear CRUNCH! He had rear-ended the car in front of him! I felt so bad.

What's the nicest or most memorable compliment you've ever received?
Oh I am SO sitting down for this....

I need help with this. If I *do* take the risk to try complimenting someone then I generally go for the honesty approach. However, for some reason it usually falls flat.

I guess I either say the wrong things, deliver it wrong, get my timing wrong, or totally misjudge how it will affect the person receiving. The only way I really know how to deal with people is to speak my mind so the other person knows exactly where they stand with me but more often than not what *I* thought was a compliment gets mangled in teh translation and comes across like some kind of stupid awkward come-on, which inevitably embarrasses me and makes me want to back-peddle, which makes the bumbling even worse than it already was until I just say "forget it. I'm sorry. Just forget it, I wasn't even here..". This can EVEN happen if the only thing I said is "I like you".

I'm so hopeless at it. It's not even funny. At this point I'd much *rather* just act aloof and disinterested but if I like someone then there's always going to be some moment when my aloof-o-meter is turned off and I say it without thinking about it and embarrass myself again. *sigh*

Anyway enough whining about this in public.

I got a really memorable compliment from someone once, all the more so because I thought she might have meant it.

We were on a date (this was a long time ago....) and she kept looking away from me when she was talking. I thought she wasn't interested in me so I asked her if she would rather leave and do something else (IIRC we were in a cafe drinking coffee). She said "HUH?" so I told her "Well, you're avoiding eye contact so I'm guessing you're not comfortable"

and her response was "No, that's not it. It's just when I look at your eyes when I'm talking I forget what I was trying to say".

    That was good.
