Cummerbund removal from Brigade

Hi,
I have a Brigade and so far have enjoed diving it a lot. However, I find the cummerbund annoying and wanted to remove it.
After a quick look at it, I noticed the shoulder straps are attached to the cummerbund...
Is there something I'm missing or is the cummerbund more or less an integral component of the BC?
