Considering a personal compressor for SCUBA

I've been pondering getting a small (slow) portable compressor for filling my own tanks, something like the SCUBA MAX 35. I know they're expensive, but where I live it's a 45 minute drive (one way) to the closest place to refill my tanks. I was thinking about a gas-powered compressor for its portability, which adds some concern to mixing exhaust fumes with the air intake.

Anyway, a co-worker has an old compressor (I think it's a Trident) that she wants to sell. She says it's about 17 years old, but has not been used that much and was well taken care of. She's offered to let me try it out, and it was suggested I put new filters on it, fill a tank and have it tested. This makes some sense, except where might I have the air tested?

I fear taking a home-filled tank to my not-so LDS may not be a good idea (they already hate the fact that I try to do things without going through only them).

Any suggestions on my ideas? Comments? Opinions? I can always change my mind, but a little research can't hurt.

i personally (with zero experience. just for the record) would start by calling the local fire department. if nothing else they may know of a place to have it tested.

Tod,

You need to be considering this from the standpoint that your personal time and convenience are of value to you. The expense of gasoline and vehicle usage are also real concerns if air fills are the sole purpose of the trip.

Do not loose sight of the expenses beyond the purchase price like filters and possible repairs.

I have considered doing the same and started this thread that may be good reading for you.

Thanks for the link. After doing a search for other threads on this similar topic, I only then discovered there was an entire section where this thread would have been better posted. D'oh! (However, I now see that many others, including yourself, have already asked my questions.) That's what I get for only coming in here once in a blue moon.

Anyway, you are correct in that I do place a high value on my time. Two hours in the truck, out of my way, to refill my tanks is not what I prefer. I am also aware of, and expect, regular maintenance costs. I also (what I saw in that thread) do expect to have a few new "good friends" show up once they find out I have a compressor, but that's okay. More people to go diving with.
