what special considerations for someone with contact lenses/ eyeglasses before trying to go diving? tnxs.

I just wear my contacts...Haven't had any problems at all. May have to close your eyes if you have a full mask flood ...but so far so good.

I used to wear contacts while diving ( my first 350 dives), never had an issue until I had a salt crystal scratch my eye. (ohhhh nooooo, my cornea!!!!!!) I now go with out contacts, but my vision is ok without the lenses. As long as you are comfortable with your mask skills, you should be fine wearing lenses.

I have a prism in my glasses, i have an astigmatism and the perscription is -2.75.

I have thought about a perscription mask. Right now, with just a regular mask and no contacts, I see better underwater than on surface with my glasses.

Exactly... contacts are actually the best solution for being able to see while diving. They allow you to see in the water, on the surface and with or without a mask.

I have always dove with my contacts - my vision is really pretty poor (-9.00 in my bad eye and -7.50 in my good eye) and a prescription mask would be a poor choice for me. I am sure that I am about to jinx myself by saying this, but I have never a single problem on real dives. I occasionally will have a contact get out of place in the pool doing drills and I lost one once during a lap swimming pool session. If I have to for a class (or real emergency) I can open my eyes underwater without a mask and not lose a contact. I just don't open them wide. I do discard my contacts after this (I wear disposable soft lenses). I originally ordered some thicker, wider lenses for pool drills (in conjunction with my optometrist), but I have found that my normal ones work almost as well.

thanks a lot for the info guys...

My vision sucks and I dive with my contacts. I practiced for the no mask swim requirements for cave in my pool with my eyes open with no issues. I did the no mask swims in the springs with my eyes open. Amazingly my contacts don't seem to float off.

Easy to lose a contact on the surface, I always keep a spare pair in the save a dive kit. Have yet to lose one when actually diving - have had one pop out on the swim grid after a dive.

I swam and dove with contacts for a long time. Had a -4 to -4.25 depending on the time of day. Then I had Lasic this summer! 20/20 now :)
