You and me both! At the end of the day, it's just one really big swimming pool, but if there was one near DC, I'd be there 3 times a week just to get wet during the winter. It's also great for working on skills in a relatively controlled environment.

Build one in the southeast, and I'm there... regularly... Great place for most skills...

Quick question if any of the cavers know... Is the compression of the open air in the simulated cave equivalent to whatever atmospheric multiple would exist at the depth of the entrance to that cave?

(I'm sure there's more a coherent way to state that... but it's late... or early... or something...)

Unless they have a lock out feature like a sub it would have to be ambient pressure.

They fill the "chambers" with compressed air to keep the water out. If you stand there, you can talk with a slightly higher voice :cool2:

It's pretty echo-y too. Small space, flat walls. Haven't figured out a good way to carry on a conversation in there yet. But then again .. you don't need more than a few words ... you're supposed to be diving!

If you get to the "cave" area, an easier solution for talking is to be had just a little bit shallower. Come out of the caves but don't exit the overhanging area. You can swim up by the wall and you'll find yourself in an open (er .. compressed) air space above the caves that's much, much bigger. It isn't much of a place for hanging out, but you can talk much easier.
