Sorry, my sarcasm meter wasn't turned on enough. :) I just wanted to make sure any manufacturers who read this knew that making housings reusable was something good, not bad. As you say, they probably "know" it logically but the primal cries of the marketing department wanting to sell something 'new' all the time probably drown out the knowledge.

I hadn't thought thru the U/W mode issue before, but it does make sense that they wouldn't make a housing of their own for a camera they didn't plan an U/W mode into. Fortunately the U/W modes are more or less useless outside of a thin range of conditions, so that doesn't stop the 3rd party housing manufacturers.

With the 420's LV advances it seems like the 330 is well and truly orphaned as a design approach. Not much likelihood of a 430 or 530 now it seems. Ah well, just got my kit together, got it fairly inexpensively thanks to buying used, so can't regret it too much. Besides, I've never taken a single pic yet like the scads jlyle gets with his 330, so I've got plenty of growing room with this camera still before I chase the upgrade train myself.

Whoa! Them's kind words, my friend. Since you've been so nice, I'll tell you a secret: I learned from Chris Menjou who said, "shoot 'til your finger bleeds." Roger Carlson told me, "if the camera goes to sleep during a dive, you aren't taking enough pictures." Even a blind squirrel (that's me) finds an acorn now and then.

I have 2 E-330's, so unless I flood both of them I won't be upgrading too soon. There will always be something better.:D

I'm with you, George. I, too, have bought a back-up E-330 and will be shooting this system for a long, long time.

The move from my beloved C-5050 to dslr was a big jump. While I like my dslr, I can't really say my images are any better - just a little easier to take without the shutter lag of the point & shoot.

My next camera is going to have to be a vast improvement over the E-330 & it just isn't out there yet.

If I didn't have my 330s, I would be sorely tempted to start with the new E-420, with its small size and, hopefully, useable liveview.

Deborah is shooting an SP-350...when did they say the E-420 is going to be available?

I am a little shy to comment on the release of the 420. I am new to photography with 20-25 dives on my 330. Not one scratch on it.

Thanks jlyle for starting this thread and letting me know that I could spend more money.:D

Gee...and here I was thinking I had to ask the missus instead of Jlyle. This makes life a whole lot easier. Jyle I need a new 50mm Macro, 7-14mm WA, the new large dome with sharp edges and a macro port with manual adjust rings to go with the 50mm...all before May.

Yes...I think I've got a long way to go with my E410. The bodies are already dirt cheap and the introduction of the 420 is likely to cause it to drop even further. There will always be a few who upgrade just because. I don't feel my photos are going to get any better with equipment. Right now, I need to grow into the 410. The exciting part to me is the quick output of lenses...the more the merrier.

The E-420 is due out in May '08. An U/W housing, if any, will follow.

I have been keenly following live view dslr developments. There are some pretty good deals on E-330 camera bodies now, but the housings are big and expensive.

Better wait until I drown my SP-350.

The excitment of something new always gets the best of me. I realize the upgrade and more money spent wont improve my photo's.

That shoot till your finger bleeds thing might work for me.

Gary,

You have my permission to buy yourself some new toys. Ask yourself, can you afford the divorce if you don't clear it first with the Boss?

Another tip for married u/w photographers - let your wife buy a horse. Since Deborah bought Fonzie, she doesn't ask when UPS drops off another package from B&H at our house. On the other hand, never buy anything that eats - you thought u/w photography was expensive...
