Hey all,

I'm running Vista 64 Home Premium at home and when I try to install I.R.I.S V2.3 (the latest from the Mares web site) I get the following error message right after the installation starts:

"The operating system is not adequate for running I.R.I.S. 2.3"

The installer works fine on my laptop running XP. Does anyone know a solution for this on Vista 64? Is a new version of IRIS in the works that corrects this problem?

Thanks
Nathan

Hi Nathan,

I am not operating Vista so I don't have experience with this. I suggest you go to the Iris support website at IRIS Support you may find a good answer to your question.

Hope this helps!

The following is found on the web site pinted to by Zak Ohara in the previous post.

Solution for DRAK and IRIS on Windows Vista
space.gif

SolutionSome users receive an error downloading from Dive Computer on Windows Vista.

This issue is related to a not correct behaviour by the serial port driver.

Both IRIS 2.x and DRAK 1.x releases are affected by this error on Windows Vista.

You have two options to resolve this issue:

1) Disabling the Windows Vista UAC control.
You could be find informations about UAC from here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa906021.aspx

You can disable UAC in various manner. We suggest this:

a) Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu.
b) Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAC"
Click on that line.
c) Press the Launch button.
d) A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
e) Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

Note that you can re-enable UAC by selecting the "Enable UAC" line and then clicking on the Launch button.

2) Removing the following key in the registry (you have to run regedit.exe application)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/National Instruments

Then download the latest VISA RunTime Driver from the vendor site at the following address:

http://ftp.ni.com/support/softlib/visa/VISA%20Run-Time%20Engine/4.2/win32/visa420runtime.exe

Install the new driver (full installation) and reboot the computer.

That fix is documented as fixing a problem when downloading data from the dive computer. I am unable to get the software installed.

Rightclick, properties, windows XP compatability.
Then run it by rightclicking and "run as admin"
Might help on the unable to install issue..
And for the record.. disabling UAC should be quite temporary as it reduce the security of your OS..

I submitted a trouble ticket to the support page that Zak Ohara suggested (thanks Zak) and this was the response:

-------------
Dear customer,

IRIS does not support Vista 64bit.

Try to run it in 32bit compatibility mode (check ot ask to Microsoft
support for this feature).

Regards.

IRIS Support.

I've done that and run it as admin as well. No luck, same error. Come on Mares, I hate Vista as much as the next guy but it really is about time to get your act together and start properly supporting it if you don't want to lose customers. If I am unable to find a solution to this soon then Mares has lost me as a customer for a long time. This shouldn't be difficult, Vista has been out long enough now that the problem should have been figured out.

One last note on this thread, unless something changes. I asked the person who originally replied to my support question when they would have Vista 64 support introduced. This was the response I got:

--------
I'm sorry but due to driver issues, 64bit version will not be supported.

I suggest to use a Virtual Machine for using IRIS/DRAK in a 32bit
environment. You can find more informations about Virtual Machine on
Microsoft Virtual PC pages at

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...02-3199-48a3-afa2-2dc0b40a73b6&displaylang=it

or VMWare products at

www.vmware.com

Both release free software for virtual machine. You only need a
Windows XP or Vista licence to run it as Virtual Machine.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

So, no Vista 64 support at least according to this guy from a support site that isn't within a Mares domain name. I've gone through the mares.com site looking for a contact email address there so I could relay my displeasure at the fairly expensive computer/console/PC interface not being compatible with a modern Microsoft OS but mares.com has no contact information as far as I can tell.

Anyway, consider this a word of warning if you are considering the purchase of Mares equipment.

"I'm sorry but due to driver issues, 64bit version will not be supported."
I just love that line. They could as well have said "because were lazy, 64bit version will not be supported".
I love it when hardware manufacturers are too lazy to write proper drivers and blame the OS. Especially considering the fact that all new computers come with 64bit motherboard and CPU these days and 32bit is, lets face it, on the way out of the market..

My feelings exactly. On my old XP machine the USB download module shows up as a USB serial port. So the hardware seems to be something along the lines of USB->Serial->IR interface (the dive computer talks to the download module through IR). This shouldn't be difficult for a driver manufacturer to re-write, even if the architecture in the OS has changed.

When I built this machine one of the reasons I decided to go with Vista 64 was to make sure that the software _I_ wrote was as compatible as possible with the latest and "greatest". How many hours does it take to re-write a USB driver? The GUI/rest of the application is already there. Compare that driver re-write time and cost with how many people will choose to not purchase the product because of this and my bet is it is not a financially good decision.

Hey Nathan,

I was able to get it to work on my system finally. Vista 64 ultimate. For downloading I use a Serial to USB adapter. Here's a link to the thread I started a few months back regarding the same issue. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/mares-just-add-water/192792-i-r-i-s-windows-vista.html don't know if you'll find much help, but I ran the newest version of IRIS that was Vista specific and things have been doing fine for some time now (though I eventually reverted back to 32 bit due to all my other software that I could not get working :S - I heard the "we will not be supporting 64 bit" quite often from other companies)

I am (and was running under 64 bit) version 2.3 for vista IRIS 2.3 Full Setup for Vista (need to setup an account if you don't already have one)

Not much help really, except that it seems to work with "some" systems at least...

Hope you get your working.

Aloha, Tim

P.S. another reason mine might have worked was that I was using a Serial IRIS and not USB...
