As of last weekend I can proudly say that finally I dive a Hogarthian rig, and while the BP wings aren't new for me, long hose and sans console certainly is, so forgive the petty question but which D ring should I use to clip off my SMB? It used to be left hip, but now that is occupied with a shiny new DIR Zone SPG.

Left hip d-ring. You can clip more than one thing off to a D-ring at once. :)

That was easy and makes sense. Thanks

Butt ring, out of the way and no accidental removal (with risk of dropping) as with hip d-ding. Or stowed between diver and BP

Damn, I knew it couldn't be that easy. I thought of the butt ring especially as it would lessen drag, but worried that the SMB might unravel completely without me noticing. Also, it might look a bit odd, but if anyone laughed I could point them in the direction of this forum.

If you secure the spool/reel correctly it should not come undone. If it would unravel, it would be irrelevant if it were attached to your hip-D ring or butt d-ring......... you would be in a mess. :)

Well, that's not quite true, if it came unravelled on the butt D ring there is no way of knowing until you looked for it at the end of the dive or were dragged off by a whale shark or something. With the hip D ring you have a chance
Another option is a pouch like dive rite sells. Can carrry either the 50 lb lift bag or an smb. Best option for me with the sausage though is in the pocket on my thigh.
Sure, pockets on my thighs is top on my list of things to do, but I'm off to The Philippines in a few days and won't have a chance to set that up before I dive my arse off around Bahol for 10 days.:D

If you are swimming along and the spool comes undone/releases line, in both situations it will get your legs. It really makes no difference if it is attached to your hip or butt, in either case you can not see it. (Next time when you are in the water try to literally see the hip d-ring....especially with a Pony slung)

I would even argue that you have a better chance of getting things undone if attached to your butt. You can cut loose and take it from there. When the spool is at your hip, very likely it would also have eaten your SPG. Now you SPG is entangled with line attached to your leg.....

But that is an extreme example, best is to make sure it doesn't happen in the first place by securing line and spools. Check connected items regularly throughout the dive.

three guys and three options; I guess there isn't a textbook DIR way to do this, so I'm going with hip D ring (because that's what I used to) and will transfer in to a thigh pocket (as my instructor does) when I can. The butt ring option is still under consideration and I'll try it out to see how I feel. Thanks fellas
