In an article in the Dutch leading magazine De Volkskrant today Dode duikers mogelijk ‘drugsplukkers’ - Binnenland - de Volkskrant
it's speculated that two divers that surfaced dead in Amsterdam's western harbour area may have been involved in drug picking off a boat.
First last Thursday a dead diver surfaced followed by a second one last Saturday.

The two dead divers were found at a location where Colombian and Venezuelan coal ships anchor frequently and the last couple of years (coal) ships from these countries have been involved in drugs smuggling (cocaine).

Diving drugs pickers have been caught on two earlier occasions whilst trying to retrieve cocaine torpedoes from underneath a boat.

The identity of the divers is unknown at the time being but autopsies may help to reveal they identity and nationality.

Unfortunately the article is in Dutch.

what the hell is a cocaine torpedo. I know what it sounds like but seems like a big torpedo hanging off the bottom of a boat might be a little suspicious

And what is a drug picker?

Sounds to me like it would be a torpedo shaped object filled with cocaine and attached to the bottom of some huge coal hauling ship. Unless they have divers down there looking at the bottom of each and every ship that goes there, I highly doubt one would be spotted. A hundred lb cocaine torpedo probably is about the size of a person.

Dropping dope and other drugs is a pretty common technique. A boat goes by and drops the goods, which then sink to the bottom. Latter divers come by and bring it up. I have also read where a timer is used so that a ballast balloon is inflated after so much time has passed which then allows easy retrieval. Of corse some of the cartels have built their own subs to transport the goods.

Sounds like steady work. How did they die?

Cause of death was unknown and with the autopsy on the divers more insight into the cause of death was hoped for.

And what is a drug picker?

You ever picked flowers? As already mentioned, a person who retrieves the drug filled torpedoes attached to the bottom of the ships.
