I'm a Fish!
My jeep and getting a new vehicle to get me from point a to b and take dive gear for 2-3 people.
The jeep is a 1989 jeep cherokee laredo. while i've owned it i've replaced the alternator 3 times. Due to gas reason i no longer use the ac. only the heat and fan and windows. It gets good gas mileage but i'm looking for more since this is a daily driver.
My prefered vehicles are ones that get around 20 mpg in the city, less than 35 grand, awd. I would prefer new or lightly used. Never had a new vehicle.

The vehicles i'm looking at are:
nissan rogue
toyota rav 4
nissan murano
honda crv

If anyone has some feed back or currently owns one and wants to give a simple review that would be appreciated.

As a Honda dealer I must recommend the Honda CRV.

Check out edmunds.com and read the editor's reviews there.

You may be surprised which one of those vehicles comes out on top.

I'm a Honda guy myself - I love the CRV's, new and old, and would buy another one any time if given the chance. But definitely read the Edmunds stuff, you will find it informative, I promise.

Also, make sure you check the NIIS or NHTSA (or whatever the acronym is) for the crash ratings. I SHOULD know off hand based on my day job, I'm ashamed. I'm not sure which comes out on top, but I would guess the Toyota and the Honda would beat the Nissans just based on past history, but who knows.

This may seem absolutely ridiculous but me and 2 other dive instructors did a trip to SC in a Toyota Prius:) It has quite a bit of room for gear, believe it or not and the 41/2 hour drive was very comfortable...Problem is you will have a hard time towing a boat if you have one:)

I enjoy the heck out of my '06 CR-V. It's done well, including after hitting a deer with only one payment logged. From a diving standpoint, it carries tanks & gear very well in the rear compartment. If you need additional space, the seats fold down very easily, creating a nice "walk-around" space for my two dogs when we're out & about. I'm not a smoker so this doesn't bother me but there's no ashtray. I kind of dislike the placement of the gear shift but I've gotten used to it. All wheel drive for the win!

I loved my Nissan Pathfinder, but my CR-V has made me a Honda guy.

I love my Chevy HHR! It holds an amazing collection of stuff without squatting and still gets good gas mileage loaded down. I've only noticed a 1 mpg drop in my gas mileage with a load and I've got the big engine.

Tricks to up your mpg with an I-6

Remove the Gov from the air box
Replace Filter with K&N (Clean it once every 6 months)
New Muffler Flow Master Delta Flow 40
Full Synthetic oil from now on Engine, Differentials, X-fer case and Trans
Drive no more than 60mph Every 5 mph over 60 is like paying $0.42 extra a gallon
Close your windows and use the AC. That is a Myth about it taking more gas, you use more fuel trying to overcome the drag caused by the windows being down.
Start slowing down sooner and use the brake as little as possible.
And as much fun as it it to teach the Ricer about "Low End Torque" try and refrain from "beating them at the Line" at every traffic light.

This put my TJ to about 19.7 Highway and made surface road driving hardly take any gas comparatively.

Based on the experiences I've had after maintaining Nissans well, my recommendation would be to take the Nissans off your list. I'm talking about big dollar repairs as a result of parts or systems that should never hav failed. I will not own one again. Our family now drives two Toyotas, totally trouble free, and the remaining Nissan will be replaced next year with a Toyota.

Are you looking to sell your old Jeep? If so I would be interested.
