I'm looking at buying a USIA suit. The website is not very clear on the pockets available. Does anyone have more details on the detachable pockets, this MOLLE system? Does it work well? What are the pockets themselves like...velco or zipper...mesh or gromet drains? Do they have a D-ring inside to which you can clip items?

You can get pockets that are permanently attached to the suit, or you can get a MOLLE panel installed on one of both sides where a pocket would be.
From there, you can pick the pocket you want - velcro, zipper, whatever. I have one of each and I know that at least the zipper pocket has a small plastic D-ring inside. Because you can take the pocket off and play around with it, it's easy to add whatever you want to add.
The MOLLE system has been used on military and public safety gear for a while. It works well. The only drawback I have found on my drysuit is that the edges of the pockets aren't stuck to the suit so line can get hung up on the corners. You can order a suit with pockets permanently attached if that's as issue for you.
I picked up one of these a MOLLE dropleg panel from ebay so I can use my USIA pockets with a wetsuit during the summer.

how does this work? did you sew it on your wetsuit or glue it? any pictures? great idea...
This is the panel I bought. It's not the perfect size, but for the price it works out just fine.

Right now it's not attached to the suit. You could easily pull off the straps and sew it on though. I use mine like one of the DiveRite thigh pockets (attach to the waist webbing and strap around thigh).

i have the diverite pocket that attaches to the webbing on the belt and has velcro to go around the thigh but it can be a pita at times. i think all wetsuits should come with thigh pockets.

Make sure you contact me if you are interested in adding a pocket to your suit. The Molle system is great if you are interested a removable pocket system
