so wats it like to catch a 100 lb fish on a speargun. that thing has to drag you all over or does it died right away. and i love tuna any shot at shooting one of the coast of nj

Hello,

New Jersey has excellent spearing/fishing for both yellowfin, bluefin, and bigeye. You'll find the bluefins in shallower water (mostly between 15-50 fathom line) and the yellowfins and bigeye a bit deeper (15- 2k, 3k, 4k... fathoms). If you look at the picture of the bluefins I posted, you will see we shot them out of Indian River, DE... exact same hunting/fishing grounds as southern Jersey. There is a reason some of the largest tuna tournaments in the world are held in Ocean City, MD and Cape May, NJ. The bluefin run between June-October, the yellowfins and bigeye show up in early to mid July.

Hunting tuna (we are not on scuba) we use breakaway bungee and floatlines so the fish fight the float(s).

I don't know how the heck those guys like Chad and Pat freeshaft such big reef fish... yes they have described it like a thousand times... but I think theres more of an art form to freeshafting big fish like that.

 Regards,
Chris

Largest on a regular setup: 142 lb Black sea bass off Panama... biggest I have seen, using breakaway and float... 482 lbs..

OMG Chad that Black is a pig. I would not want to wrestle that guy. My biggest black to date was 44#s and he destroyed two freeshafts and fought like a cobia twice his size. I barely boated him and was well into deco before I had him secured. Both shafts hit the spine but deflected high and low when we autopsied him. Gags of equal mass are not near as strong due to their longer bodies, IMHO.

My bigest is a 60 incnh ling cod shot while free diving on the ca. sonoma coast and my second largest is 40 inches.

My biggest is a 354lb. Sandtiger Shark. Speared at 170', tied him off to the rig leg and went back down again with another gun and shot him as he was sinking at 190', 9th dive of the day.

I know I'm gonna catch flak for this.
