Or so I thought. When I was in the writing mode, it worked fine, but it came out different when it was posted. I have used it for a decade without a problem. Hmmmm.

Nope, that's not why. I just transposed the numbers :p

Ž®, Ž©, Ž°, Ž±, Ž², and Ž³ are the only ones I know off the top of my head. Anything else I'll go to the Character Map for.

Edit: Scubaboard seems to have problems with those characters. It's adding a in front of most of 'em.

It's not likely SB... check your page encoding. Remember, this is a website, which means it's your computer not understanding the reference.

Nope, one of the upgrades they did to the SB server software definitely horked up rendering certain characters on the SB end, including the degree character and several others. A damned shame too, but I guess it is what it is. I just got used to typing out the word degree, and I thought Tammy's superscripting the lower case "o" (like this: o) was a brilliant idea that seems to be unaffected by this bug.

Here is the link to the "Odd Characters" thread in Site Support.

We now return you to your very strange thread....

The skill that always puzzled me was the "carrying the instructors gear up the hill after the dive" skill.

Our instructor had us sit and ride our BC with tank and all rigged on the surface then slip your arms in slide off the end and right into your bc. Never have used it in real diving or ever seen it done anywhere else.

Do you do many boat dives? We tie our gear out on the drift line. Saves you lugging it around the boat and being in the way.... When we are ready to dive, you just swim over in your mask and fins. If your buddy is busy on the boat or you have been just puttering around, it is quite common to have a seat on your gear and float for a minute. Then you just roll into your bc and descend..... Lazy way diving... The best.:D

ooh ooh! That's my favorite!! It is quite possibly the MOST valuable skill a student can learn. It is something that Should be practiced every dive. trust me...

"carrying the instructors gear up the hill after the dive" I think I'm going to add that skill to my next class.

It's been a while...but I seem to remember something about "wax on, wax off"...it's pretty foggy...

Anyway...

I still remember from my Naui open water, our instructor had us...

1. drink a bottle of coke underwater.
2. eat a banana underwater
3. dive to the bottom of the university golf course lake (The lake was pitch black from all of the Milorganite runoff) and collect three golf balls.

I just googled my instructor, Dr. Charles Burchell, and found this interesting note:

Dr. Charles Burchell retires from Southern Miss. - Free Online Library

That's funny, I had to do the banana and coke thing too. We also had to breath from a cylinder directly from the K valve.

The way I was taught, was to plunge the tongue rapidly in and out of the mouthpiece. The tongue acts as a piston, forcing out the water. It's been about 30 years, and I have never used it since.

Not on a regulator anyway!
