Yesterday a buddy an I took two novice student divers for a quick introduction dive.
and the youngest a fresh 20 year old asked...an I have never been asked this..."can you yawn underwater?" I said no but after awhile I begain to ask myself have I ever been asked this? if anyone has a more tec amswer please let me know, I felt kind of dumb! :confused:

A suppressed yawn can be a good way to equalize.
 
If you yawn underwater...you lose your reg

I don't see why you would lose your reg...just use your hand to secure the second stage in your mouth as you yawn.

Can't be any different from coughing underwater...due to the compressed air being so dry, I've had my share of coughing fits underwater! :)
 
I recommend more interesting dive sites as a preventive measure.

Seems as if warm water would be more conducive to yawning than cold.

Recent research posits that the primary purpose of yawning is to cool the brain.

Who gets so bored that they need to yawn whilst diving?

It wasn't specifically stated by the OP, but I bet the student asked this because he wanted to equalize his ears with a yawn. I often yawn on flights to equalize, but have not tried it underwater yet.
