Great Lakes, Great Treasures
Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 1-5pm
The great lakes comprise the greatest body of fresh water in the world. They also hold one of the best preserved collections of shipwrecks, many of which are yet to be discovered. Join a renowned group of great lakes’ maritime historians and shipwreck divers and discover the fascinating stories of our inland seas. This multifaceted program will also feature lighthouse and contemporary shipping history. We have a diverse group of presenters and programs this year, including the following:
  • Larry Elliot, ABC-12 (Flint) Morning News Anchor- Larry is an avid diver and was involved in three expeditions to the EDMUND FITZGERALD shipwreck and in producing three award-winning shipwreck documentaries. Larry, as keynote speaker, will relate his experiences during the three Fitzgerald expeditions.
  • Ric Mixter-Award winning film Great producer and former ABC-12 and CBS-5 reporter, Ric’s work is seen on the Discovery Channel, History Channel and PBS, and he is the recent recipient of the Award for Historic Interpretation by the Association for Great Lakes Maritime Historians. Using underwater footage and historic imagery, Ric’s program will explore the great November storms and shipwrecks.
  • Patrick C. Labadie- Resident Historian for the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary- Patrick is the former Director of the Saugatuck Maritime Museum and Director of the Canal Park Maritime Museum (Duluth) and past president of the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History. His program will provide an in depth look at the evolution of wooden hulled vessels on the Great Lakes.
  • Brian Jaeschke- Registrar for the Mackinac State Historic Parks- Brian worked for the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and is a former merchant marine sailor on the Great Lakes. His program will detail the history of the Straits of Mackinac railroad ferries and ice breakers, CHIEF WAWATAM and SAINTE MARIE
  • Bruce Lynn- Assistant Curator of Programs at the Sloan Museum-Bruce is the former Interpretive Supervisor for the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum/Whitefish Point Lighthouse and his program will examine the history of the Whitefish Point Light Station.
Cost: Adults $17, Senior $16, Child (3-11) $15, which includes museum admission and light snacks. Click here for the brochure!
Just so's ya know!

Sounds really interesting. Too bad its in Michigan :(

I'd go just to see what Ric Mixter has to say. Looks like a pretty good cast of characters to me. Alas, a bit of a haul from my digs too.

Looks like a great event. I'd be there in a heartbeat if it were just closer.

I might be interested in this if Ted and Mike are going.

And too bad we have all the wrecks worth diving, *&^% buckeye:)

I'll be coming back from Shipwrecks and Scuba and will try and make it.

Now, now. I believe NY, WI and Ontario (to name a few) would probably disagree just a wee bit.

We have a few wrecks over here in the Pacific too!

I didn't mean it like thatttt....just that its really far for a day drive. (if i'm not actually diving, that is. When diving, no drive is too far)
