Bought DX1200HD PRO Pkg. Pelican Case Too Small

I am not lodging this as a complaint here but rather a "has anyone else had this issue" type of question.

I purchased and have received this package from one of the major online Sea and Sea dealers in New York. From what I've been able to determine, the camera, housing, strobe and misc. Sea and Sea components are in the same box, then another dealer/company packages the Pelican box with the box with all the camera stuff and ships it.

Here's the issue. The Pelican case that was comes with this package is the Pelican 1500 which is 7 inches deep...and that' measuring the outside. Take away the thickness of the bottom of the case and lid. The 100a strobe is 6 1/8 inches long. The foam in the Pelican box has cutouts already for the strobe, camera, WA lens, etc. Well, with the 110a strobe in place and with the waffle type foam inside the lid of the Pelican case, one must apply a great deal of pressure on the end of the strobe to get the case to close. This is the end of the strobe that has the battery opening with the O-rings, etc. Plus, this part of the strobe is that high denisty plastic. I fear the pressure caused by closing the lid can break or damage the strobe.

Has anyone else ran across this issue?

I have the 1500 and tried the foam insert twice but as my rig grew (Sea&Sea DX-1G, wide angle lens, chargers, 2 YS-110 strobes etc.) the foam never fit right. I then purchased the padded dividers for the case along with a storage section that fits onto the lid of the case and it works wonderfully. There is plenty of room for everything. You definitely don't want to exert excessive pressure on the lid to close the case and I think if you get the padded dividers you will be pleased.

The 1500 and precut foam set fits the strobes and cameras as follows: DX-1G, 8000G, 5000G, 1200HD, 750G, 860G and YS-27, YS-110, YS-17, YS-30's. The camera must remain in the housing and each section has both side and bottom layers that can be removed.
We will post an image to show a properly packed 1500 case with foam set in the next few days.

Please checkout the images of the 1500 case and precut foam set. The 110's do sit higher due to the battery compartment, however, they do not hit the lid when closed. The image shows the following products in the Pelican 1500 case:
DX-1G camera/housing

Your statement compells me to ask, did you try to close the lid? For if you did, you would find that the foam in the lid does contact the top of the strobe and continues to put pressure on the strobe all the way to the fully closed and locked position.

The egg carton like foam in the lid, when closed, comes to within a fraction of an inch of the foam in the bottom of the case. In your picture the strobes are shown protruding no less than 1 - 2 inches above the level of the foam in the bottom of the case. If what you are saying is that they do come in contact with the foam in the lid but not the lid itself......with that I do agree.

However, one must put allot of pressure on the lid to fully closed and lock the case. This puts a great deal of pressure on the lid to the strobe's battery compartment, not to mention the stress it puts on the rear hinges of the case.

If you are telling me, this is how it is and to go ahead and close the lid of the case with the pressure being applied on the strobe then fine. That's what I will do. I want Sea&Sea to tell me that is how its suppose to be. I don't want to incur a broken battery compartment cover or a leak in the battery compartment due to the continued stress on this watertight area and have Sea&Sea come back later and say I should have noticed the tight fit and contacted someone.

Frankly, if I were designing this case, I would have designed the foam so that the strobe was laying on its side instead of standing vertically in the case. That would solve this problem. The downside to that is it would not allow more than one strobe to be carried in the case.

Hi Jim-
Yes, we have and use this for our demo units and have no issues. Have you made sure that both levels of foam have been removed from the strobe sections? Our cases do not "put a great deal of pressure" on the strobe - the foam insert on the lid compresses and does fit snugly, however, the actual hard lid does not hit or put pressure on the strobe. In our opinion, you will be fine and have no issues.

You certainly can purchase a replacement 1500 foam set from Pelican and cut your own sections to fit as you desire.

Thanks for the additional clarification. Here is what I've done. I have rotated the bottom foam insert 180 degrees to where the strobe hole is now in the lower left corner of my case; the camera hole is in the upper left and the hole for the arms are on the hinge side of the case.

With the foam in this position, the lid does not have as far to go to the full closed and locked position and exerts less pressure/force against the strobe.

I can fit everything into the case (two YS-110 strobes, wide angle lens, close-up lens, DX-1G camera, housing, manuals, strobe arms, batteries, battery chargers for both the camera and AA rechargeable batteries, lens covers, and fiber optic cables. With foam I had a hard time with just the basic items.

Looks like it would work better, though after just dropping a chunk of change on the whole camera outfit I really don't want to drop another $80 for the divider... That and it wouldn't get here before we leave anyway.
