My wife & I, plus her parents made plans to stay at Marazul Dive Resort (which is down the street from All West and right next door to El Rancho Sabrino). Plans were made back in October '09 for a 3br bungalow, in a gated facility, facing the water. We got there about 6pm and were met by the "manager", who looked a little shady. He showed us to our bungalow and we went inside. There was a safe on the wall but he said it didn't work and not to worry because there hasn't been a robbery there and that he'd take full responsibility if anything happened. With a lot of apprehension we unloaded the car into the bungalow. After a nice dinner at Sol Food, we went back to the bungalow for an uneventful 1st night. Next day over to Kalki for a couple of dives, while the wife and her mom stayed on the beach of Kura Hulanda and rented lounges. (Oh, this was after tossing a dead rat over the cliff wall that was outside our door back at the bungalow.) Went to bed that night with my ipod on the table next to the head of the bed so that I could look at the time if I woke up in the night. The next morning I went to check the time and my ipod wasn't there. After questioning my wife and looking on the floor & under the bed for the ipod, I went out to the LR to have a look. I found my ipod case, minus the ipod and yelled it to my wife. She came out to the LR and checked her waterproof case and her money was gone (only $ and not CC's). Her parents checked their things and the mothers cash was taken too. Apparently, the thief came into the BR's & took stuff out into the LR to root through before leaving. However, everything was nicely zipped back up and closed so as to give an appearance that nothing was really amiss. Now the kicker is that I went around and checked all of the doors AFTER we noticed the robbery and ALL of the windows/doors were locked. Hmmmm . . . . inside job maybe??? Someone had to have a key in order for that to happen. I saw one of the neighbor/owners outside and went to speak with her about our robbery. She was extremely shocked and very helpful and went to phone the police and the "manager". The police arrived and did nothing (as I expected) and said very little, took very little notes and left. The "manager" showed up about 9:30 a.m. with 2 of his thugs and wanted to come in and have a look around. I prevented them from doing this (thought they wanted to see what they missed) and then a big shout-down went on between me and one of the thugs. After this, we decided it was not safe for us to remain and contacted our neighbor/owner friend again about our decision to leave. She called her friends at Lagun Blou (over on the cliff of Playa Lagun) and Sunshine to see if there was any room for us. Sunshine's place was rented, but she called Lewis at All West, who was also booked. Finally the friends at Lagun Blou called back and there was a rental next to them that we could have for the remainder of the week. Turned out to be an excellent rental with security camera's, locked gate and a very respectable manager.
What we learned, besides not renting a place w/o a safe, is to move all valuables into the BR at night and lock the BR door. Seems like it should've been thought of, but we didn't and now encourage anyone travelling there to do likewise. Our neighbor/owner friend at Marazul even had her safe pulled off the wall one time.

Now, I just want to publicly thank Sunshine for all of her help and kindness during this (she even came over to Lagun Blou to make sure we were ok). Sunshine, you were fantastic to us and it would have been much more difficult without you, Dorothy & Author, Pierre & Maureen and Lewis. Lewis, from All West, was helpful in getting after the local police to get our police report back to us before we left the island. So thank you very much Lewis!!

I am very disappointed to hear of this. Not planning on staying at Marazul anyway, but this would keep me away. I assume the condo was privately owned. Any chance of getting this info to the owners so they know about the problem? It certainly doesn't sound like some local thief just happened to hit your place.

I am beginning to think I need to start taking one of those old-fashioned BIG dive knives with me on dive trips, although it would probably never get wet. Or a spear gun.

New from Spyderco: The ABC Islands dive knife:

I'm (mostly) kidding.

This incident was extremely unfortunate and all of us who live full or part time or have a business in Westpunt felt just awful about it. Please don't turn this thread into a rehash of the Bonaire theft threads. It is yes, a very similar story. The police do not arrive with a CSI team to take fingerprints nor do they bring in a group of suspected men for a line up. Things are very different here, Dutch laws are not US compatible.
Even in small little Westpunt we watch out for each other and everyone's guests. David and I, Dorthy and Arthur, Pierre and Maureen and Louis honestly hoped to help salvage our visiting friends' vacations - by working together. Franco thought he could convey this by putting a positive angle to a very trying couple of days and we all thank him very much for his kind words.
We have tried to help alleviate the problem; Jost at Lagun Blou and Louis at All West have put in very extensive and expensive camera surveillance, we have big dogs. We all tell our guests of the dangers and the simple steps to take to make them less of a target.
There are many things we would like to see changed on the island (s) but have come to realize that each cause would require a lot of involvement, money and most likely at least a generation to change. (Including literacy, birth control, animal rights, family values, crime, even customer service and healthier work ethics) When you visit Curacao (or Bonaire) you are going to another country - you are not in Kansas anymore. You can not expect things to be the same as in the states and (again, please do not go off on this thread) because we and others who post, know the situation, our suggestions eg. do not leave anything of value in your car... are really given to help but taking a distributor cap, lying in wait to try to catch a thief or getting physically confrontational will not help. And.... it's your vacation!
We (all of those mentioned) love this island. There are many wonderful reasons. Please come, share it with us, take a few precautions and find out what makes it so special.

Sunshine:

Just to be clear, my comments about staying away were directed at Marazul, not the islands (well, except for the dive knife thing). It sounds like a problem with an employee and such things are not confined to any one locale.

Frankly, I don't think all the crime discussions make any difference to anyone. We all jump on these threads to argue positions we already hold and we convince no one. Very few people who go to Bonaire or Curacao will stop due to this stuff and those who won't go due to their perception of the crime issue will deem it confirmation of their decision.

I didn't know Louis put in cameras at AllWest. I kind of have mixed feelings about that, but its probably for the best, except now I don't have an excuse to bring my dog with me.

FWIW, I have decided to purchase a couple of devices and take them with me on trips from now on. They are both little wedge alarms that will sound if a door or slider is opened (Simpler than the knife idea).

I hope this isn't true. What's the point in having a forum at all if it doesn't make a difference to anyone. I think people look at a lot of factors when picking a dive location - at least someone that's not already formed an opinion. Crime is obviously only one factor however.

Yikes, I am supposed to stay at this place at the end of February! Not good. I sort of wish I didn't know this, because obviously I will now be paranoid. I did quite a bit of research, and Marazul has received pretty good reviews, generally better than Lagun Blou. It also seems slightly more upscale. I even read some translated Dutch reviews that were positve. At this point, I'm not inclined to change my reservation because everything is set up, but this unfortunate incident does make one think about things. I guess I'll hope that lightening does not strike twice. For peace of mind, I may have to invest in some of the cheap travel safety devices that were mentioned in the other long thread about crime on Bonaire. However, I realize that these probably don't make much difference and are more of psychological rather than practical benefit. Also, I will demand another unit if it turns out mine has one of the "non-functioning" safes.

Just think, in the pre-internet days, we never would have known that these events happened. I may post a link to this post on the Curacao Tripadvisor Forum, which gets a lot of traffic. Perhaps this will unduly scare visitors to Curacao, but anything that would prompt the management of Marazul to increase their secuity or address the problem might be beneficial.

This incident would never keep us from returning to Curacao! We live right outside of New York City and people get robbed here too (sometimes worse) but we're still here. I wanted to tell our whole story in hopes that the next traveler will be smarter than we were (ie: lock your BR doors at night with valuables inside). Secondly, I wanted to tell everyone about the wonderful experience we had with those I've mentioned in my OP. Had Sunshine, et al, not have been there and been right on top of things, we would not have easily transitioned the remainder of our stay to a great one.
We are the victims, if anyone has a reason to badmouth & trash Curacao we do . . . but we won't. We'll be back again and again.
