I did the Odyssey last June. It was my opinion the extra expense was worth it. The boat, food and service are top notch. You can do a maximum of 5 dives per day. That said, I only did five one day. The other days I did four. There were four people on the boat who had previously been customers of the Odyssey. I think that says alot about the operation.

When we came in, I talked to a couple of ladies on the dock who were going on your trip. They asked me about the diving and they got quite apprehensive of the dive profiles as I described them. How did it work out?

Ok, you were the group that was getting off the boat when we were getting on then.

There's the Truk Odyssey...and then there's everything else.

I spent a week at the Blue Lagoon, and two weeks on the Odyssey. People love to say that it costs a lot more, but it doesn't. Not going to repeat the math here - I've posted it many times before - but when you add everything up on an "apples to apples" comparison, it's not much more than a few dollars extra...and FAR superior. (Unless you want trimix or simply don't want a liveaboard.)

PS - A shop owner who "prefers land based" but has "never done a liveaboard, so has made up his mind" is really...um...uh...Well, I'm sure he's a great guy, but he'd be the last shop-owner in the world I'd go on a dive trip with, much less allow to plan one.

When are you looking to go? The Odyssey tends to book YEARS in advance if you want the whole boat.

We are looking at late in 2011 and as of right now it looks like there will be 4 or 5 of us.

As for the shop owner - although he loves diving, he enjoys the vacation part of the trips as well. Myself - the more dives the better. We have slightly different perspectives on diving and with Chuuk being one of his dream destinations, I am hopeful he will strongly consider the Odyssey due to the expense and distance involved combined with the fact that the Odyssey looks to be a beautiful ship. Add in the fact that it would appear there is roughly nothing to do on land plus the Odyssey has suitable area if he just wants to kick back and relax without doing all the dives ... this might be a great opportunity for him to try a liveaboard.

One more question on the land based resorts - what are the (if there are any) beach conditions like at the Blue Lagoon and/or Trukstop?

I did not pay attention to the beaches so I can not comment on that. If your shop owner wants to see the history on land he could do a tour which can be arranged by the Blue Lagoon dive shop. Many of our group did this. You are put ashore in the morning from the Odyssey and don't fly out until very late that night or the next morning. The land tours are run by independent operators. From what I understand the quality of these tours varies greatly. Ours was pretty good and I found it a great way to spend the afternoon.

There is no beach at Truk Stop. The resort is built about 10 feet above the sea and a sea wall protects the property. There is probably 50 meters of property that faces the ocean. They have a very long pier with a nice covered area at the end.

Blue Lagoon probably has 200 meters or so of ocean front but not much in the way of beach. The area is mostly grass with a few palm trees scattered around. They have a very short little dock. The Odyssey anchors off shore in front of Blue Lagoon and uses small boats to shuttle people back and forth.

Why not have the option to do both the Odyssey for the recreational profiles & frequency (4 dives/day), and Truk Stop land based for the deep mixed gas/deco & technical penetration dives?
