#1: No Dogs allowed.
- My wife doesn't dive so she participates with me by playing with our dogs so they get an outing, while I dive. Their always leashed and tied off on 6 foot leashes out of respect for others. We got to Kirkfield Quarry early today and the neighbors Husky came scrambling down to meet our two boys. My wife reported this was the same dog that harassed her the last time we came there but this time the dog's owner was watching and came down, angrily collected his husky and left. Within 20 mins the Quarry owner was by to complain to the dive master about the dogs. He let it go this time but complained that the our dogs could interfere with diving and not to bring them again. We had no idea about the dog restriction.
Unless I'm mistaken, the instant the quarry owner charged an admission to his property, it stopped being private and became a public venue where Ontario SPCA laws would come into effect. He could still impose a restriction but the other dog would not be allowed to run free. Oh well.

#2: BE ON TIME!!!
I was the first one there but there was a group who showed up later for open water certifications as is common. One of the young men and I got to talking (he was about 17) and he reported how he had to "bribe the old guy" to be able to do his cert dive. He said he showed up to the site about 9:30 to find the old man locking up the gate. He asked to enter and was told he was late so no entry! He pleaded with the old man noting this was his cert dive and how much he had spent on all this but the old man wouldn't budge. So the boy reported offering the old guy $20.00 to let him enter. The old man reportedly took his cash and let him in.
I'm not sure if that would be Bribery or extortion but sounds like the old guy was pretty hard on the young fellow. I mean yes young people can be irresponsible and stuff but its a recreational activity, not a corporate meeting. Anyway, be on time or be prepared to pay more to the old fart.

The old man that is getting the waivers signed and collecting the money does not want to spend all day at the quarry doing this, I'm sure he has other (better?) things to do.

We stress to our students that they need to be on time and so far they never been more than 5-10 mins late. this has never cause us a problem.

Though the dogs is News, as one of our DMC has a dog he brings from time to time and it's never been an issue as it is very highly trained and well behaved.

Happy Diving.

I have no idea why divers dive this site after certification its just a silt pit. The AKK gate keeper has been there for years with his neighbors and there never going to change so just find another dive site.

They lock the gate while you're diving and no access. What happens if there's an injury and emergency vehicle(s) need access? Does not sound like a good place to me.

I wouldn't dive at a place where an emergency vehicle can get direct access to the dive site. Not only is that opening up to huge lawsuits ( waivers or not, you are liable if you hinder an emergency vehicle). Also why are they doing certs at a place that is doing this?

Final straw, bribing to get in. Sorry buddy, I can be a little late and if you don't like that. Loss your side business because I would encourage other divers not to go.

Yes, not a big fan of locking the gate in regards to emergency vehicles.

It's been a long time since I've dived Kirkfield, I wouldn't say it was a silt hole, as Innerkip holds that title :)

the "old guy "is ken he is the guy who collects the money /caretaker ,i find it hard to belive he locked the gate as i go there alot and have been going there for 20 years, i have seen viz 30 ft in there and 5 feet , he knows emergency veichels need access, (by the way there are 2 gates ) i dont like the 9 am ridgid schedule either , but if enough people tell him they dont like it im sure he would change it ,he makes alot of money over a year (tax free im sure )so if you tell him your group will not be going back ill bet it will get his attention ,he will change dog policy too

A buddy of mine was there for a pumpkin carving and said it was great. I told him I would give it one more try. The first two times were crap so maybe the third time is the charm. :idk:[/hijack]

Sorry for the offtopic....

I agree with a no dog policy. Too many don't stoop and scoop (yes I know not all, but enough). And I've seen too many dogs tied up (necessary) and howling and whining when their owner disappears under the water and struggling against the leash, barking, and whining until their owner safely returns. And it's generally no use telling them what went on, they refuse to believe, since all they see is the calm (worn out) dog. Some will say I don't like dogs, in fact I grew up with dogs and like them too much to see them put through this. `
