I will be there Saturday as well...planning on getting there between 10 and 11. I haven't seen anyone post up in a while about temps, but normally this time of year it is 80+ degree top to bottom.
Look for me, I will be in a red Saturn coup. If you need a buddy I can splash with you.

Hi All my wife and I dive there every weekend and the temps have been very warm low 90s. I can't remember when i wore my wetsuit the last time. Visibility is hit and miss. I'd say for best chances of good visibility get there early. The last few dive's I've done I stay somewhere around the 50 foot platform and play. The vis has been really good (well good for mt storm)
I don't think I am going up to Mt. Storm this weekend though because I just need a break from it. There's only so much to see there
. I'm sure I will be back up the following weekend. Feel free to drop me a PM if you want conditions.

Hi, thanks. I got back from Storm today and it was like my usaual trips to Mt. Storm, unpredictable. There was an thick fog only allowing me to see 15-20 feet off shore. The outside temp. was about 68 degrees and the water was a balmy 93 degrees. (Nothing like diving in a hot tub) The vis was between 7-10 feet. Still it was a great day to meet some new people and dive with friends.

Not wanting to start a new thread... but I'm thinking about driving up to Mt. Storm over Labor Day weekend for the very first time, with my son. We'd overnight somewhere Friday night, dive Saturday, overnight again, then drive back Sunday.
I understand dive flags are required, but not always enforced? Hmmm... don't have a dive flag, and will have to get one... Never used one either. Any trick to it, other than being careful not to get tangled; and not attach it anywhere in case it gets snagged by a boat?
I've been checking out lodging in the area. Not interested in camping. We're kind of asocial anonymous-chain-hotel types, if only because of the quality consistency. Thinking of staying up in Cumberland, about an hour and a half from Mt. Storm. Any thoughts?

If you are going to stay overnight, Cumberland is kind of far away. There are a few hotels/motels in Davis or Thomas WV that are nice and only 20min drives away. As far as the dive flag, I just usually swim mine out to the buoy attached to the 25' platform and hook it on there before I start my dive. Or if you have it attached to a spool, just head to the platform 1st and drop it off till you're done your dives.
I'm usually up there Labor Day weekend, but I'm going to see Buffet this year and don't know if I'll make it.

Hmmm... the local lodging doesn't seem to be well represented on the 'Net. Not much in the way of on-line reservations or rate quotes, and the few reviews I'm finding are pretty varied. Any specific recommendations?
Hour and a half drive from Cumberland (right?) wouldn't be bad, considering how far we'd be coming.
The law there is just that you have to surface within 100 ft of "a" dive flag, right? So it's not necessary to tow the thing around with you -- in effect all you're doing is establishing your surfacing location?

The dive area is pretty much marked out and rare for boats to venture into it. YOu do not have to tow the flag. Many times divers will see 3-5 flags already out tied to the platforms and just leave theirs on shore. If classes are going on a few shops leave theirs out all night.
