Problems with Advanced and Stress/Rescue Class

Again what do you do in your rescue classes. And if I am within arms reach of my students I am in direct supervision of them. I know exactly where they are.
And this is a rescue class with certified divers who should be fully capable of bringing an unconscious diver safely to the surface. My OW students can do that. They have done it at least 3 times in the pool before they even get to OW. If you are seeing certified divers panic at the sight of an unconscious diver in an open water training situation those people have no business with a certification of any kind!

EXACTLY!!!!! Like I said before, why does diving have to be for everyone? It should be a sport/hobby for people that have the mental capacity and skill set to do it in a safe manner. This is the same reason that not everyone gets to go into space; it takes people with skills, knowledge and training. I guarantee that that training is not geared toward 5th graders!!!!

Isn't that why there is snorkeling, and even a class for it?

I can assure you that I don't 'go "unconscious" and sink to the bottom' without warning. I'd hand the student a refund and show them the door for pulling that trick on me, and they have a right to expect that I won't do it to them.

Practicing rescue skills is great. Pretending to be dead without warning isn't.

However you can feel free to do whatever makes you happy, since I'm not responsible for your actions.

Sorry to bring the thread back on topic, but . . .

I took the SSI Rescue Diver course, and while the book was written on a . . . shall we say 'lesser' education level? . . . It wasn't at the "See Jane run." level.

It was the instructor walking through the application of the tenets of the book that made it educational. Because we dive the same areas, he was able to put forth a scenario, and then change it with, "Suppose we are at the beach in San Carlos, . . ." and "Suppose we were at the island and . . . "

The biggest wake-up call was the actual drills in the water . . .

Hey, hey! I was with you on the annoyance of "cute" learning material in serious classes; but I both dive and snorkel, and I don't see snorkeling as "lesser." Snorkeling is fantastic in its own right.

Snorkeling is fantastic but face the facts, snorkeling doesn't require the skills or knowledge that scuba does. I also spend some time snorkeling and am not knocking it(or you), I think you are not understanding what I was getting at. Hope that helps, sometimes it is difficult to put feelings into words for me.

And you wondered why you were labeled an elitist. Get off your high horse, brush that chip off your shoulder and enjoy yourself and the wonderful company you might meet if you quit thinking that us hobby divers are any less capable under the water just because we don't think of our certification classes as an education. We might just suprise you!!!

I agree that SCUBA is more complicated, and that snorkeling is simpler. I just didn't see the need for "putting down" snorkeling to make your point. It struck me as unnecessarily condescending, and, having agreed with you earlier (about the "cute" learning material), I guess I wanted to respond.
