I started diving using Hookak, and every one of the island boys I dived with was not certified.
The death rate was high. The injury rate higher. The aussie govt supported an education program to start getting them trained, as well as educated on positioning of compressor exhaust hose, since the majority of deaths were carbon monoxide poisoning.
The oldest diver I met was in his late 60's and was an old helmet pearl diver. God love him he still was out on the Hookak most days by himself, yep, picking up some beer money in crays, but most were young, bold, and reckless.
I solo dive, and it is very deliberate. I have my own guidelines which are mine and determined by my own capabilities on any given day taking into account where I am and whats happening around me. I know the risks and I accept them.
Some time ago I remember reading a members statement on this and found it very true.
It went something like this......If you feel you have to ask the question when? Then you are not ready.

I wouldn't require someone with a couple hundred dives involving different activities complete AOW prior to Rescue. The purpose of AOW is to expose divers to various activities within diving. If that same student has already done several dives in the 60'-100' depth range, knows how to use an underwater compass appropriately, has done several night dives, takes photographs underwater, etc, then they have more than the equivalent experience. An AOW course isn't going to be beneficial for that diver.
It is possible for someone with Padi OW to do the confined skills of rescue.
They cannot participate in the open water scenarios. In saying that, I wonder if it may be possible to apply to padi for recognition of ALL THOSE dives for advanced certification.
I really don't think it would hurt to ask.

I always saw AOW as an exposure to types of diving. I never thought of it as truly "advanced". I went deeper than 60', on night dives, started taking pictures, worked on buoyancy, etc. with mentors. I hate collecting cards just to make it up some chain to prove how good I am. I wouldn't care to have an AOW card unless I needed it to do some other courses like rescue. I just want to be a safe diver in the dives that I want to do. They don't make courses for "special" people like me
I have a couple of other divers interested in a Rescue class. If you're interested, let me know and we'll get one scheduled.

Do you ever have a class that meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday? Those are my days off.
My schedule is really flexible. The issue will be finding another diver that can meet on those days. We only run Rescue classes with at least 2 divers. I'll check around, though.
