Shears that don't rust?

lemme know if you find some good ones, i go through a pair every month.
Im currently using DR titanium coated SS for northeast scuba supply.
just got a pair of sea snips in a lot of gear. They are normaly twice as much but just looking at them i dont have faith that they will be any better

Just for fun I removed the pin on mine and replaced it with a small stainless screw, washer and lock nut. It's a little "thick" but still slides into and out of the shears sheath just fine. After a year and several salt water dives (including a couple of "oops i forgot to rinse them") the replacement "pin" shows no signs of rust. I think it cost almost 50 cents for the 3 items at the hardware store.

Interesting. But is this all in fresh water?

The majority of my dives are freshwater, but there have been saltwater dives also.
A week in the Keys, N.C., and some Jetty dives in Panama City, but, I do rinse at the end of the day after diving. I tend to rinse all my gear at the end of the day, but I don't give any extra attention to the shears other than drying them. I do dry all my metal (snaps, knife, shears, etc.) and none of them have rusted yet.

I have started something that is easy and may prove helpful. Results from the first tests look good.

I had just come home from diving.

I removed a plastic storage containter from the kitchen cabinet. It measured approximately 7" wide x 12" long x 3" deep.

I half filled it with cooking oil.

I rinsed my knives, shears, clips, etc in fresh water and wiped them dry.

I then submerged them in the oil, put the container aside, and let it all sit for a week in the oil.

The process is simple and easy and seems to reduce the rusting considerably.

Most of my dives are in salt water and I carry multiple cutting tools.

I try to wash and dry all my stuff but even with silicone lube, my trauma shears show some rust at the hinge rivet. Previous posters have replaced this with a stainless steel bolt/nut for increased service life. Keep in mind that all stainless steel formulas contain small amounts of iron and that is what rusts.

The only cutting tools I own that show no signs of rust are made from titanium. I like my OMS z-knife but love my OMS (Fiskars) shears. Found out they were really Fiskars when the OMS sticker peeled off after the first dive. Half the price at Home Depot as apposed to what I paid at my local dive shop.

RJP posted earlier this week about a new z-knife he purchased. May want to search his post about it. Looks like something I will pick up and let my daughter "give" me for Christmas.

You never need a cutting tool until you need a cutting tool. Carry two in case you drop one. I prefer a z-knife and a set of shears but opinions will vary.

Same here. My OMS sticker hasn't peeled off, but, we use the Fiskars at work and when I had the chance to compare them, they are one and the same. Buying them from other than OMS you get the nice bright Tn. VOLS Orange color.

Alternatively, perhaps a response such as "shears are a technological solution to a problem with diving skills."

Apparently Dive Rite's "Titanium Shears" are made of 440 SS

XS makes a knife/shear hybrid.
Never seen or used one personally.
