I was following this thread contently and thought the Dive Assure top program sounded good on an annual subscription... until I called. Canadians aren't covered...

Not just hosers, several states are not welcome too. From the 'diamond policy' site page,

"DiveAssure is currently available in 45 states and is not available to residents of: LA, MD, ND, NY, WV. "

I have a DAN premium membership and have Dive Assure Diamond coverage. Probably could have made do with the regular DAN membership, but I like to support them.

Both the DAN premium membership and Dive Assure insurance cover dive accidents and trip interruption/cancellation due to personal illness other than dive accidents.

DAN is far cheaper if you are doing just one trip. To get additional coverages through DAN such as cancellation due to a family members illness or death you would have to purchase DAN insurance which is done per trip. If I had been insuring for one trip, this is what I would have done.

Dive Assure coverage is one amount, whether you are insuring one trip or twelve. You choose the amount of coverage and your pricing is based on that. As I had a number of trips planned and wanted extensive coverage, this is what I chose.

Unfortunately, I had to use it. I received a very timely and appropriate check from Dive Assure for the nonrefundable expenses I had incurred for my trip. They asked for appropriate documentation which was not as easy as it might sound as I paid a Spanish travel agent via eft transfer. It was amazing to me that I received it so quickly before the trip even departed which was to be this Friday. :depressed:

Both coverages are good, and I was not terribly worried about the primary versus secondary thing. But for multiple trips, Dive Assure made the most sense to me.

Went with Dive Assure over DAN because of the primary vs secondary insurance issue.

My Suunto computer asks for DAN numbers, not Dive Assure, don't know why. No options to change it.

My divessi.com account gives an option to upload dives to DAN but not Dive Assure.

Why are these options not available for Dive Assure?

I had an Incident" in Coz last year in which I had to utilize my dive assure coverage. The doctor and chamber took my dive assure without question. I also had to spend a night in the hospital between chamber rides. The hospital did not accept my assurances nor the doctor in carge of the chamber that dive assure would cover so I paid a little over $100.00 which was reimbursed immediately upon my submission of the bill by dive assure. They were excellent. Using DAN insurance I would have had to pay everything there (about $12,000.) and waited for my insurance to pay, after which DAN would have paid what was not covered by my insurance. There is an example of the difference between primary and secondary insurance. The hospital in Coz insisted upon cash because they were not familiar with either dive assure nor my local insurance coverage. Of course the doctor running the chamber was very familiar with dive assure.

I have DiveAssure and not totally happy with it with respect to emergency evacuation.

DiveAssure's policy states that all emergency evacuation must be pre-approved by Travel Guard. If you are unconscience and no one calls for pre-authorization, you may be paying emergency transportation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Emergency Evacuation means:

1. Your medical condition warrants immediate transportation from the place where You are Injured or suffer an Emergency Sickness to the nearest hospital where appropriate medical treatment can be obtained;

2. After being treated at a local hospital, Your medical condition warrants transportation to where You reside, to obtain further medical treatment or to recover;

3. All of the above.

Covered Expenses are Usual and Customary expenses, up to the maximum, for necessary transportation, medical services, and medical supplies incurred in connection with Your Emergency Evacuation. All transportation arrangements made for Your evacuation must be by the most direct and economical route possible.

Expenses for your Emergency Evacuation must be:

1. Recommended by the attending Physician;
2. Required by the standard regulations of the conveyance transporting You;
3. Verified and approved in advance by Travel Guard.

Expenses for medical services and supplies must be recommended by the attending Physician. Transportation means any land, water, or air conveyance required to transport You during an Emergency Evacuation. Transportation includes, but is not limited to, air ambulances, land ambulances, and private motor vehicles. The Insurer will not cover any expenses provided by another party at no cost to You or already included in the cost of the scheduled Trip.

All transportation must be authorized and arranged through Travel Guard.

To access Emergency Assistance, call Travel Guard operation center at:
[1-800-401-2271]
Or call collect: [1-713-260-5507]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone from DiveAssure would like to comment that this as an incorrect interpetation of their policy, I'd like to hear from them.

DAN insurance members are required to call Travel Assist.

DAN is split into two parts:
  • DAN not for profit: medical support that anyone can call, research, reference
  • DAN for profit: makes money selling insurance

The two are very separate entities, and the DAN for-profit benefits from the "luster" that rubs off from the DAN not for profit.

The numbers your computer(s) are asking for is to allow uploading of your dives to a DAN database (the DAN not for profit side), which promotes research into DCS etc.

DiveAssure is an insurance company. That's all they do. They have no interest in gathering dive data.

All the best, James

PS - it's worth pointing out that as checkered of a history as the DAN for-profit insurance side has, that it still is possible to support the very worthy DAN not for profit research, by becoming a member of DAN. You don't have to purchase DAN insurance.

For those living outside US, DAN Europe seems to offer better insurance. It is worth checking it out.

For those that are not familiar with US insurance terms, what are the implications of primary vs. secondary insurance please?

Primary insurance will pay out to the claimant upon request regardless if you have other types of insurance. Secondary insurance waits until all your other types of insurance pay out and then they pay whatever is left unpaid.

But if there is no primary of any kind, secondary would still have to pay, right?
