BDSC - This thread is really about the current situation - not last years events. I know quite a bit about what goes on with Sea Shepherd. I don't know why you want to be so confrontational and insulting. I have nothing against you. I disagree - thats all. You are entitled your opinion but it would be nice if you could do it respectfully.

Yes. We should be respectful when discussing all criminal activities. Where is the thread to discuss the awful living conditions of the Somali boatmen who are simply trying to harvest commercial value items in their offshore waters? Calling them pirates just inflames the otherwise rational dialogue.

An official investigation into the collision was conducted by the Maritime New Zealand authorities as required by UNCLOS. They took data from GPS, data recorders, video footage, and personal interviews with crew from the Ady Gil, the Bob Barker, and the Shonan Maru. After a six month exhaustive investigation, their conclusion is crystal clear--the Shonan Maru caused this collision by failing to yield to the stand on vessel and by operating the SM in a reckless manner.

The Ady was so low on fuel that they had stopped in the water, making no headway ie dead in the water. They were all (but one) sitting on the boat, whiling the time and waiting for critical refueling from the Bob Barker. They had no fuel to do anything but that last minute attempt to get out of the way when the japanese ship veered at them.

You can watch the Japanese video all you want. The earlier part of the video clearly shows a boat making no headway. Even when the Japanese video shows the imminent collision, there is very little headway as the engines were newly started. Only at the last minute was there any real headway...their trying to get ahead of the turning ship. Yes, believe what you want.

Out of fuel....oe too little fuel to make any significant moves. Very little difference

As for pumping fuel out of the wreckage. They explained in the show (did you even watch it?) That they were very concerned about the several different toxic fluids onboard and tried to get all of the residual when it appeared that the ADY might sink. They towed her for hours in an attempt to salvage it. Unfortunately, she was taking on too much water to get her anywhere to salvage and she was cut loose to sink.

I don't understand what the Japanese do with the Whales. How do they use them? What is being done to stop the market for whales?

funny . I wouldn't call that an unbiased website.

The report I read on by the New Zealand Maritime inquiry ruled they were both at fault for not giving wide berth to each other. It's wasn't "crystal clear" that it was caused by the Shonan Maru like you said. :rofl3:

it's pretty simple. They sell them for consumption. However if you'll notice that all of their vessels are marked "RESEARCH" etc. So it's pretty much a scam.

The meat is harvested and sold in Japan where people like to buy it. (that itself presents a whole other argument on whether it's right or not).

You can even buy it in a can like Tuna Fish.

So, your not saying that the Ady was under full steam and purposely rammed the whaler now?

Well, at least, that is an improvement.

Peter Bethune, New Zealand skipper of the Ady Gil said yesterday "They basically drove straight over the top of us and there was nothing we could do. We were all on top of the vessel except for one of the crew members who was inside. When they were about 50 metres away they suddenly veered to starboard and cut off the front three or four metres of my boat and sheared it in half. If anyone was in the forward sleeping quarters they would be dead."

It "found no evidence that either vessel master had deliberately caused the collision", but said there was "a failure by both masters and the crew... to appreciate and react appropriately to avoid colliding".

The only person I have insulted is Paul Watson for saying he is "whacked out". While some may call that an insult many people would say it's the truth. Other than that I was just trying to set the facts straight. Someone posted this on the thread:

"Uh, you are completely wrong. The Ady was out of fuel and dead in the water. They couldn't move out of the way."

And then in one post you backed that up. (But did later correct it). I also have nothing against anyone on this thread. Just wanted to make sure the facts were presented as they happened.

The finding was that both vessels were responsible, the whaler AND the Ady Gil

"The government safety agency, Maritime New Zealand, said in a report released today that the captains of both the Ady Gil and the whaler, the Shonan Maru No 2, "were responsible for either contributing to, or failing to respond to the 'close quarters' situation that led to the collision".
It "found no evidence that either vessel master had deliberately caused the collision", but said there was "a failure by both masters and the crew... to appreciate and react appropriately to avoid colliding".
