Hello,

Was wondering if I wanted to get my AOW with SSI would specialties from a PADI course be useable? I have night, nav, deep, photo, scooter, from PADI and wreck, nitrox from SSI as well as my OW from SSI. Not sure if it really makes a difference who the AOW is from just wanted to know.

The specialties will cross over, as long as they are compatable or similar. Most of what you have will cross over. The biggest difference in AOW from the 2 agencies is: PADI's AOW is 5 adventure dives (comprable to SSI's Advanced Adventurer level). SSI requires 4 full specialties & a minimum of 24 logged dives to attain the level of AOW.

thanks

you write that you have navigation/deep/and 3 other specialties from padi ..Just have a padi instructor get you a card.you already did more than what is required for the advance card.

That's a bit like asking whether McDonalds would accept Burger King discount vouchers :)

It's important to note that the PADI and SSI AOW courses are not direct equivalents.

The SSI AOW equates to the PADI MSD course.

The PADI AOW equates to the SSI Advanced Adventurer course.

If you have 5 PADI speciality certifications, then you can apply for PADI AOW certification, because the first dive of each speciality course equates to the adventure dives that comprise the AOW course.

Not quite.

By US standards the SSI OW course is 4 specialties + a minimum of 24 logged dives.

Its been a while since I got my MSD through PADI, but I think PADI's MSD standards are 4 (or 5) specialties + Rescue Diver (SSI's Stress & Rescue) + a minimum of 50 logged dives.

Sorry, I left out that the padi specialties I have are part of the PADI AOW cert. The reason I asked the question is that I noticed on the SSI site the requirements for AOW byt SSI were more than PADI. I know (well I am pretty sure) that the PADI AOW is good anywhere I should need it, but if I decide to go further and maybe get into being a Dive guide or something, I would probably go through SSI. So what I am getting is that the PADI AOW cert is equivalent to Advanced Adveture.

So since I have those specialties through PADI (again I have wreck and nitrox through SSI) would I be able to apply for my SSI AOW or do I need to take two more specialties through SSI? Sorry if I am not conveying it coherntly. I am not worried about Certs for diving just thinking of what I may want to do and like to know the best approach (I know dive, learn, and get experience is the most imprortant thing)

Thanks

Your night, navigation, deep, photo should cross over with no problems. Not sure about DPV (scooter) since I have never seen SSI officially list it as a specialty- it may be a distinctive specialty, though.

tstorm...even if dpv doesnt transfer it was such a blast....
