If by pre-gapped you mean setting the spool or reel on the 'return' side then picking it up as you complete the circuit, all in one dive, I've done that and didn't see any problem at all with it.

I do believe the level of honesty in this pole is seriously flawed. Im not perfect and there are jumps I will do blind at one place only because it comes back out on the main line within four feet. I never swim on the line unless conditions dictate it. Im there to see cave, not line. Its my job to know where that line is at all times, just like you should know how much gas you have without having to look, at least be very close anyway. That being said, I could not possibly count all the divers I have seen doing jumps that are silty and over a ten foot gap from the main line at places like Peacock, JB, Madison Blue and others. There is just no way I would buy this pole as accurate.

I'm impressed with this as a troll attempt. :D

I think Kevin's point is as valid as the question I asked that I do not believe anyone has answered.

The issue with visual jumps is lack of a continuous guideline to the surface. Is there a difference between visually jumping through the Roller Coaster tunnel while scootering, and not placing a primary reel through the Eye, your planned exit point?

Similarly, how hard is it to navigate from the end of the Hill400 line to the mainline, compared to finding your way out of the Eye without a line?

It's the same way with lots of things. Lets say speeding is determined to be a big part of auto accidents, so we set up a guideline of no speeding to eliminate accidents. Is someone going 5mph over as likely to have an accident as someone going 100 over? What if the 5mph over guy is on dry roads, with new tires, and the 100mph over guy is on wet roads and old tires? Obviously, it's not enough to ask "do you speed?" and when the person goes "sometimes" for you to respond "you shalt die if thine behaviours do not change post haste!"

That said, I still do not condone any visual jumps by anyone.

i'll do visual jumps in situations like lynne describes - closing a circuit back to gold line, could turn around, well within gas limits, etc. (godzilla, big room, crossover with the other ends all jumped.) we've also done crossover putting in & pulling out all jump lines - pothole, line, crossover, line, crossover, line off, crossover, line off, out peanut. it was the last dive of the week & we decided not to leave lines in.

general visual jumps? no.

If you are on the Crossover line with no jump spool on either end of the line that is a visual jump whether you ran a line initially or not. The point is to always have a continuous guideline to the surface. If the visibility blew out while you were in the Crossover Tunnel you would not be able to get back on gold line without deploying a safety.

I refused to do ginnie without a primary in the eye.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy with spending the extra time to know I'm safe and that I can follow a line to the exit.

I would like to participate in the poll, but no answer fits . . . I have done ONE visual jump, in an unusual circumstance. My guess is it will be a long time before I ever do another one. I run a primary reel EVERYWHERE, unless the main line comes out to open water, and I run jump lines, and I will continue to do so. Where I dive, in Mexico, the caves are spiderwebs, with multiple exits and many, many side tunnels. A lot of jumps are put in within arm's reach of the main line, but those don't meet my criteria of EITHER line being good enough to get you out.

We had a fatality at Peacock a few months ago where visuals may have been a contributing cause
