Almost every newbie I run into say they want to go to 100fsw. Why? Just because.:shakehead:

I've been hearing that for a few weeks now from yet another newbie with 1 year of diving and about 25 dives.
It's not that he can't do it but around here ya need a reason there's nothing to see here at 100fsw but mud.
Now there are places where there's a wreck sitting in that mud, ok lets go!:D

On my first open water dive, I wanted to test out the snorkel, so I took a breath...and inhaled a mouthful of seawater. It turns out that the snorkel wasn't even pointing up but was pointing down into the water.

I use rental equipment (as I'm a newbie), and the guys at the dive shop are generally very good about all the equipment. However, one day, they forgot to put in the undergarments for the drysuit, and I didn't double check. Needless to say, it was a pretty darn cold dive in about 6 degree Celsius water. At least I wasn't missing any essential diving gear, but I did cut my dive to about 30 minutes. From now on, I always double check everything if I'm renting.

30 minutes in near freezing water, what kind of drysuit was that?

You are a new diver with less than 25 dives and you spent 30 minutes virtually naked in 6 degree water?? in a drysuit???

Hey, diving in monterey (11C) used to be done in 1mm or sans wetsuit.
When you wanna dive, you're gonna dive.

Back on topic:
After selecting a kelp free spot to descend

Me: Is this a good spot? *to my buddy*
Buddy: No......there's a rock below us
Me: *looks at large boulder 10ft below* :w-t-f:

Yup, add that to the list of stupid things. But I left out a whole bunch of info in the first post, sorry.

I wouldn't call it virtually naked; I usually wear stuff under the undergarments too (swim shorts, shirt). I had brought an extra non-cotton long-sleeved shirt, so I put that on as well. Thus, mostly my legs were cold. Also, three or four people, including the divemaster, were wearing wetsuits, so I didn't really want to face too much embarrassment. And the divemaster gave the OK after I told her about the issue. Plus the 6 degrees Celsius was near the bottom of the dive; above the thermocline, the temperature was actually comfortable. Lastly, I wasn't shivering or close to shivering, so I didn't think there was that much of a problem.

Not trying to make any excuses. I just wanted to give more information. It was quite stupid, and I wouldn't suggest diving when the bottom temperature is uncomfortably cold to you.
