I just got a email from Padi about their new Ecard and app. I have to say they never fail too amaze me with the new ways they can come up with to separate me from my money. LOL

While others charge nothing or $1.99 for their app, PADI finds a away to put another dollar in and in and in.

I am sure looking forward to paying for this and the costs of using when out of the country with international rooming.

Dear John, #1xxxxxxxxxx
You might forget your wallet and you might forget your certification card but you always bring your phone. That's why the PADI eCard™ is something you'll need to have. With the PADI eCard, you can verify your dive certification using your mobile device and leave your plastic certification cards at home.
Now you can show off on the dive boat with all your certifications in one place or quickly verify your certifications with dive centers, resorts or instructors around the world - all from your mobile device.
PADI Divers will continue to receive plastic certification cards with each new certification but will have the option to order an eCard, plastic certification card or both on any replacement card purchase.
Before you purchase your eCard(s), make sure you have a mobile device running Apple iOS 3.x (or higher), Android 1.6 (or higher), Blackberry OS 4.5 or 5 and the latest version of the PADI App. You can download the PADI App here.
What are you waiting for? Be one of the first to purchase your PADI eCard by visiting your PADI Dive Center or Resort or clicking on padi.com today.

This too was a disappointment for me. I was told this was included in my instructor renewal. It was not. When it finally became available, it was for a fee. At some point they have to draw the line. My SSI cards are all on my iPhone app for free.

My eCard was free with my renewal.

My understanding was that all pro's would get the card when they renewed for 2012 for free.

If you don't want to pay for it, don't. It's that simple.

How and when can I get my Professional level eCard?
You can get your card now by renewing your 2012 PADI membership. Once you do, you'll receive an eCard with your highest core rating (including Course Directors and IDC Staff Instructors) at the time of renewal.

I’ve already renewed my PADI membership. How do I download my card?
Make sure you have a mobile device running Apple iOS 3.x, 4.x or Android 1.6 (or higher) and the latest version of the PADI App. You can download the PADI App from www.padi.com/scuba/padi-mobile/.After launching the PADI App, select PADI eCards, then Update. Then enter the same user name and password that you use for the PADI Pros' Site and click Retrieve Cards.

Yes, I download the app for free and got my e-card free and I'm not on autorenewal. I paid my renewal in Oct. However mine was my MSDT card, not my Staff Instructors card. So I called Member Services and was told the SI is not a "Core" rating but a special rating, however MI and CD are core ratings...

TC:
I've found that just taking a photo of my c card and storing it on the phone works just fine.

That might be the best option.

I too was told that being on automatic renewal allows this to be free but that has still not happened.

Odd. Mine was free.
