Just for fun, heres a better one. Again, not a hog reg, but same idea.

And to compare (long hose primary coming out of a side ways pointing lp port)

I normally run the long hose out of the 5th BOTTOM port right down along my right side, Then have the short reg hose coming out the front port on the right side, inflator from the front port on the left and drysuit from the rear on left side. I have always dived a reg with the enviroseal up.

I've toyed with this same exact configuration on my D1. I think it makes the hose a little bit shorter for donating, but really it's semantics. I like the drysuit inflator out the 5th, but Jim's config works as well.

Think about just how much shorter it makes a 7 ft hose. Maybe 6 inches or so. But now think of how much extra length you have if you would need to swim out of a tight place single file. A 5ft could be problematic if you're tall but the way I run my hoses on single tanks are the way I send them out when I sell a reg unless requested otherwise. So far no one has said that the way I build a reg for them has been an issue. And I've sent out a couple dozen or more now like this.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all - I've played around with both configurations and they're both satisfactory. We did inline drills in my intro to cave course when I had my rig set up the way you describe - works fine. I honestly tend to run the drysuit out the 5th because it makes it easier to switch between single/double config (one less hose to move if it's already there). Gotta love how flexible the reg is that lets you have it how you want it though.
