Hi all.

Just got a hog 2nd stage, and I have pulled it out of the box and am breathing through it (no hose) just to get a feel for it.

I notice it is making a really loud accordion / vibration noise when I exhale through it. If I unscrew the front plate, remove the diaphragm and cover the face with my hand to block off airflow, I get the same noise.

Any idea what gives? My wife had a similar, much quieter, noise from her new oceanic reg a couple of months ago, and the lds fixed it. No local edge/hog service people as far as I know around here. Anything I can try adjusting myself?

Any help appreciated. I'd love to dive this reg on the weekend if possible.

Hey mate. Thanks! Maybe you're right that it would clear up underwater, but the Oceanic with the lesser noise didn't so I guess I'm reluctant to just jump in because of that. It's quite loud. I am freaking out the cats on the other side of the room (6m) with it :) I also note if I shake it vertically there is a bit of a internal rattle.

Do you get this issue with your hog 2nd stage? I note you had some dramas getting these serviced in oz. I'm a bit worried about the same level of hassle/expense if this needs to go in.

It's most likely the exhaust diaphragm vibrating as you exhale. So long as it isn't torn, distorted or seated improperly, the noise should stop in the water and there shouldn't be any performance problems. If peace of mind requires it, try it out in shallow water before you get in over your head.

I've never heard of regs making noise when exhaling...If there's time I'd try it hooked up to a tank at your LDS.

If you're heading down to Sundive you could jump in their pool with it before the boats leave. I know Dave down there is a bit of a guru with regs. He might be able to help you?

Cheers, lads! OK, so my plan B will be just to dive it (and take it slow - first dive of the day is a 15-20m dive so pretty shallow). You're right ferris, this will be with Sundive - so I'll see if Dave has any ideas. Thanks heaps for that tip! Looks like we will be taking the early morning dive as our first one, so I'm not sure how much time there will be to play in the pool before. I will take my Zeta as a spare. I know its working, so if worst comes to worst I can swap them over on the day.

I'm just wary. The exhalation noise is significant. Maybe it will settle in, but I would still be really interested to hear if anyone else has had this issue and if so, what it was? It seems a common issue with Atomic 2nd stages (per the link OzGriffo gave, and other Google results for this issue). I take it, though, that this is an uncommon issue with HOG 2nd stages? Any other HOG owners experience this? If not, it makes me cautious about it.

It is the exhaust valve. I've had the sound with my aqualung AND Hog. Try it under water.

Thanks, Ronin. Did it eventually settle in for you?

since I only puff it a few times above water it is not an issue. The other Reg had it bad and it settled. (aqualung)

All of my regs have had the same sound to a greater or lesser degree at some point. Mostly after service when things need to seat (exhaust valve).

aaaaaargh what an awful noise to deal with, made me feel like my brains were vibrating out of my head rofl

i got one that made that noise when we dove in Bermuda and it definitely freaked me out, more so since i was already in the water and it did not make the noise when i tested it before jumping in
add to that the fact that it was our first ocean dive and also somehow i ended up wearing the weight belt that was intended for my husband, which had less weights, thus i was having a hard time sinking...it made for a pretty interesting start lol
but its true, once under it was fine
