hi
i originally was certified by nasds back around 1990. they of course are now ssi. i also have done the padi advanced course and nitrox specialty. i also just completed an ssi cenote specialty. i had been contacting different padi shops to get info on possibly working towards the master diver certification. one requirement after doing 5 specialties is to complete the rescue diver course along with their EFR course. i have always been under the impression that ssi and padi would recognize each others training courses. but when i advised the padi shops that i had completed my first aid/cpr/aed course through my local ssi dive shop, they all said they would not accept that in place of the padi EFR course.
so i am wondering if this is always the case ?? is it up to each shop to decide ?? should it not be a padi and ssi policy ?? because now i am concerned that my two specialties (ssi cenote and padi nitrox) may not be recognized by each agency meaning i may have to do an extra one to make up for it. make sense ??
thx for any input.

When did you take the first aid/CPR/aed course? Was it within the past year or several years ago.

One reason why they may not be accepting it is that it is generally practiced that this particular certification is good for 1-2 years depending on the agency. After that time frame you need to do a re-cert or refresher to stay current.

From the rescue diver instructor manual:
Prior to Knowledge Development Presentation two and rescue training session two, the PADI rescue diver course student diver must successfully complete a sanctioned course in CPR and Basic First Aid within the past two years.

I think it is left up to the individual shops as to what they do and do not accept.

I don't understand your second concern.

As far as I can tell from the padi website, the 5 specialties have to be padi specialties, so your ssi cenote wouldn't count towards padi master diver. OW, AOW and Rescue could be from another agency though.

I'd focus (intensely) on the first aid and rescue diver class before chasing merit badges to be a 'master' diver.

In fact, my rescue was 10 years ago. Probably after getting my groove on again with my diving I'll find a really good instructor and take it again.

There is a policy concerning acceptance of valid/approved CPR/FA courses as the prerequisite to resque. Perhaps they have priced the course to be inclusive of CPR/FA and you need to ask them a different way.

Or they could be like me and never have heard about the SSI CPR/FA/AED courses until now.

Also like mentioned earlier for PADI MASTER Diver all five specialties must be PADI Specialties.

from padi web site for rescue diver......"must be trained and current for first aid and cpr within the previous two years"

i def met that critieria. but they would not accept. i think it was a money grab. and this was several different shops that said the same thing.

yes i would like to do the rescue course to better myself as a diver. but i have always wanted to achieve master diver status.....even if it really doesn't mean a whole lot. it is just a goal i wanted to set for myself and have put off wayyyyy too long.

i did not realize the specialties were not recognized by both agencies. thx to some of you for pointing that out. guess i will have to decide if i want padi or ssi status. maybe i can sweet talk my local ssi instructor into accepting my padi nitrox. lol he has said in the past that normally he would not, but that he might for me.
my problem collecting specialties is that when we travel we usually only see padi shops, not ssi. so it is easier to get them from padi. maybe my cenote card will end up being for nothing.

From the 2012 PADI Instructor Manual:

Prerequisite Certifications

Continuing education courses have PADI, TecRec or EFR certification prerequisites.

You may accept divers with certifications through other training organizations into a PADI course using this general guideline,...

Qualifying Certification Description:

6. EFR Primary Care — proof of current CPR training.

7. EFR Secondary Care — proof of current first aid training.

As long as you are current in CPR & First Aid, the agency doesn't matter.

that is what i thought. apparently no one told the shops i contacted. lol
