Does anyone have any experience to compare the YS-D1 to the YS-250? I am currently using the 250 but like the size of the D1. Looks good on paper but would like to hear some feedback and comparisons from someone actually shooting with both.

Thanks

We have used both, what do you need to know? With the YS-D1 you will be getting a much smaller strobe that is almost as strong. - Scott

I shoot with a single YS250 now. I like the size of the D1 and power looked very close. I don't want to get rid of the 250 and get the D1 and then be disappointed that its not giving me the same quality and power. With a smaller strobe, I may even consider shooting dual strobes.

I have both and can say that although on paper, the YS-D1s have the same power as the YS-250s, in practice, they don't appear to have the same 'throw', and I prefer the apparently warmer color temperature and faster recylce time for the YS-250s. That said, if I'm doing big animal or wide angle photography, I'll take the YS-250s, so that at 1/4 power, I can shoot 3 fps. For macro and shore diving, I much prefer the diminutive size of the YD-D1s. The YS-D1 controls do tend to get bumped easily.

Hi!

I had the YS-110a and have now since a repair request the D1. I don't have experience with the YS-250, but compared to the 110, the D1 is stronger and gives more light. I liked the three triangular flash tubes from the 110 giving a very even light. I was sceptical at first and couldn't imagine that the D1 would have the same distribution. But it is indeed very nice.

I agree with that. Not only once did it in the mean time happen to me that I over-/underexposed due to the controls. But probably I have to get only used to them and I'll appreciate the controls while diving with dry gloves under ice...

According to specs the D1 has a very similar color temperature (with the diffusors) so this should not make a big difference. Size and weight does.

I have 2 months of solid use with the Ys-D1 in the Indo Pacific, Just returned a few weeks ago. and am now shooting with them in California.
I always travel with multiple sets of strobes and was very doubtful of the performance of the D1. Being a diehard 250 user i didnt think i would be happy with the D1 but took an open minded approach to using them.
I have to say, i am pretty happy overall and i will list the reasons
For travel-compact and lighter
output-great dump recovery but a bit slow (compared to the 250) on full dumps
Great kelvin color-Even with extreme ambient light the strobes worked well
Sunballs and high F-stops-No problem

Downfall-on/off switch can be moved easily when making adjustments
finesse - setting are rather generic vs. the 250 which offers alot of finesse from drop of directed light to x-rays..

I shoot alot in the Indo-Pacific probably 6 months or more a year, and i mean every day, so strong output and quick recovery are extremely important to me. This is the only drawback to the D1 strobe, however i meet that challenge with Eneloop or Belkin batteries and so far im okay with the performance.

I used to use the YS110a for macro and the 250pro for wide angle. On this last trip i never powered up the 250's once...
Overall Value-excellent
performance-great +
ease of travel-Excellent

Hope this helped...and good luck..
Oh and one other thing...and this s not a plug..I purchased my strobes through Bluewater photo and they were very helpful...
