I have heard of this one other time and it was ugly as well but in the end nothing could be done.
Would you want to train with this LDS and instructor again?
Int he afore mentioned incident it cost the LDS in bad advertisement once it became known.

This whole arena just enforces the find the right LDS and instructor.
To many people like myself would have never made it out of the pool has it not been for a great instructor.
Taking a few extra sessions in the pool is never a bad thing even if you have to pony a little more $$$$.
But repeating the class for a full payment without the offer of extra pool time is in my opinion is just not right.
I understand the concessions it makes on the instructor and most if not all students who struggle in the pool would be willing to either work on the skills or forfeit entirely.

I assisted with training and very few 1 or 2 students chose to stop training.
These were the students who were terrified and it was torture to be in the water for them.
Diving is supposed to be fun not unpleasant..

I am sorry that this happened and I admire your desire to continue training.
I would encourage you to seek out another instructor carefully who will commit to seeing your through your training.
Realize that this a life support type of bobbie and should be treated as such with very serious yet fun training.
When it comes to higher risk activities realize cheaper is not always better.
Sometimes it is worth it to pay the full amount or a more expensive instructor who will be worth the extra.
Just some advice and it is my opinion so take it for what it is and decide for yourself.

CamG Keep Diving....Keep Training....Keep Learning!

Actually no they did not. They paid to get certified so they did in fact get screwed.

Whooohooo... You pay for the course, you earn your certification.

I agree that a fail rate this high is ridiculous so they did get screwed. Unless they really made a mess of it (which would be quite unbelieveble).

Agreed, BUT it is obvious they were not given the opportunity to earn their certification. They got screwed.

True... but it still is a quote I really dislike...

The instructor should have known better than to do business with Groupon... Doing a discover scuba dive with Groupon is understabdable, Doing OW is just plain stupid... And it indeed looks like he realises that and tries to compensate by failing the students... That is not right.

Students to be should also realize that a course for that amount (50% retail) just can't be right.... Pay peanuts, get monkeys....

I've said it before in other threads on the subject, and I'll say it again.

I have no problem with shops using Groupon, and using Discover Scuba or OW as a loss leader (with hopes of making up the loss on gear sales or additional training). Personally, I don't think this system works, but to each his own. However, the quality of instruction still has to be at the same level as it is for those students paying full price.

You can't really blame Groupon for this, and you can't blame the agency (unless the agency knows about the shotty instruction and does nothing about it). I think it basically comes down to it all being on the instructor. I think the shop owner and instructor are likely the same person in these cases, but it is the instructor that is cutting corners.
