Hi all,
Finishing my DMC and EFR cert has run out. Having trouble finding if PADI offers renew. Do you like PADI or Red Cross for this cert?

ntmainstrm,

1. PADI does offer renewals, due to updated ciriculum, I think you will soon need a new book if you dont get it done soon.

2. If you are not going on to become a SCUBA Instructor and you have both EFR and Red Cross, I would recommend Renewing w/Red Cross. I would also ask them to include the O2 Provider portion of the course.....

Cheers,
Roger

Essentially, basic first aid and EFR courses are similar. Most recommend refresher (re-doing the course) every 2 years. The difference may only be price. If you're becoming a divemaster, is the shop you're doing it through offering a rescue diver course? Sit in on one of those if you can and do the EFR that way. You could probably save money, and you'll fulfill the requirements.

If it has "run out", you don't have the option to "renew". You have to do the complete course again. This goes for EFR or for Red Cross.

EFR & St. John Ambulance (Canada's version of Red Cross I think) differ (in my experience) in that the SJA covered a whole lot more stuff --beginning with bandaging). Neither had any kind of a written test to speak of. A lot of "trust" that you understand the stuff. I study both books fairly often. I am very opinionated on this topic and how things should change, but generally feel there isn't much difference IMO.

Is there a requirement to teach EFR if you are an instructor? I work with my son who happens to be a RC Lifeguard/CPR/1staid/O2 instructor. I just started my DM and was thinking of going Instructor.

Our shop only holds EFR courses maybe twice a year, and I believe the owner teaches it quite often. Since there about 14 instructors on staff, there would never be the opportunity for a whole bunch of them to teach it anyway. Some instructors take the EFR Instructor course just so they don't have to take EFR every 2 years. But I wouldn't think there is any requirement for an instructor to teach anything at all.

In order to take your IE you do have to be either an EFR instructor or a CPR/First Aid instructor with another agency. I chose to become a Red Cross instructor because it was less expensive and easier to market the classes to non-divers.

If you are contemplating going on the become a PADI Instructor, then I believe sticking with EFR is preferable. I believe this because it makes it easier to teach for certain shops who offer EFR as part of the Rescue course.. Of course either course Red Cross or EFR when done well gives the students what they need.

Cheers,
Roger

I plan on also becoming an EFR instructor. It was actually cheaper to become a Red Cross instructor and then cross over as an EFR instructor than it was to become an EFR instructor, at least in my local area. So I will be an instructor for both agencies and have the flexibility to teach either program. By the way I can also bundle the Red Cross course with the Rescue course after I complete my IE.
