You might find a local park ranger that is also a diver and find out what the rules are, if he isn't complying properly.....

IT really is terrible. Unfortunately if what he is doing is legal, then I am sure no amount of talking will change him. In fact, I would expect it would egg him on to show up every day. Is there any way of protecting that area? Turning it into some sort of Marine Sanctuary? Is there anything that is endangered there that could be impacted by hunting within the area? You could find a way to see if the guy is doing everything by the book or if he is selling it out of his kitchen (just an example). Other than that, have everybody park around him so that he can't get out while you go diving (assuming someone is topside to make sure he does nothing stupid)......hint....every phone has a video camera these days .

the police have arrested people after they boasted they did something illegal on facebook. But i would report him to the local fish/game -- since it was a nesting mother he took -- they sorta frown on that most places -- that's like taking a berried lobster...

As stated, being that it's legal presents the problem. Obviously his attitude is not good, unless he has been criticized and is responding to the next guy who questions him. We all know my attitude when I'm criticized by divers for legally collecting shells. It is a good question what he does with them and if they are low in numbers. If they're not, and he eats them (or even stuffs one for his wall) I see no problem--locals on some of the Carib. Islands can shell collect to sell to make ends meet and tourists can't. If they are somewhat endangered, laws should be made. Either way, it's dumb for him to advertise online that he also hunts in restricted areas, though I doubt officials worldwide will read what he says and be on the lookout for him. As far as how I would handle it--If it were in my local waters I may check into the laws and see what our LDS thinks, but I wouldn't say anything nasty to the diver as it probably would do no good or worse. If it wasn't a local area I would do nothing and let the locals deal with it.

If I knew he really WAS hunting in a NMS, I'd most certainly alert the authorities. In a perfect world, a little vigilance might actually lead to an aprehension with contraband organisms. THAT would make an impression, since agencies have a tendancy to write hefty tickets AS WELL AS CONFISCATE gear. If contraband is found in a vehicle, it too can be seized. Now THAT would be rather satisfying, I think.

cyber bullying, now isn't that frowned upon here on SB?

No matter what he has done it is legal in the eyes of the law.

So what give you and your friends the right to track him down on the internet and harass him?

Next time someone sees you speeding they should get as many people as they can to harass you on FB, SB and every other social network there is out there.

If you don't agree with the law work to change it. Have the area declared a park. I do several activities hunting and dirt biking that I have ran into "activist" while legally doing my sport. By posting his picture and promoting people from your side of the argument to confront him your coming very close to the harassment laws.

We all have to share the resources out there. Some protected areas, some harvest areas and if you don't agree with the boundaries work on changing those legally

So far the responses have been encouraging ...

- three dive shops have banned this guy and his dive buddy ... as one put it, "people like this are nothing but a headache"
- Northwest Dive News wants to do a story on the incident, as an awareness issue
- a local TV station wants to do a story as well
- but most enouraging, virtually the entire local dive community ... all factions, representing all agencies, hunters and non-hunters alike ... have come out in support of working to get this site designated off-limits to hunting. And considering it's a park, we might be able to make it happen

and nobody had to break the law....... well done! Bob, knowing your writing skill as well as your ability with a camera, I'm sure you can be a pivotal role in this going forward. Best of luck!

I reluctantly agree with endurodog, the best thing is to find a way to make it illegal. It is a shame that a complete jerk is tolerated for fear of harassment law's, it didn't used to be that way but by all means lets don't upset this fine upstanding citizen. I sincerely hope this jerk is attacked and injured by one of his intended victims. I might just find out how far legally I could go without being in trouble and tell him "I know what I am doing ... I checked out the law and as long as it's legal I'm going to continue doing it!"
