Hey guys, this is a pretty basic tray. I got the idea on the handles (weight jump rope handles) from scubaboard, as well as the idea of setting up the dimensions to be equivalent to 16:9.

So here is what you need

Piece of aluminum or steel (or w/e you want to use, something rigid). I think I got a 3' piece of AL for around $6. I only needed about a foot of it though.

Some mounting hardware (stainless bolts, stainless nylock nuts, eye bolts if you want).

Gopro Tripod mount or other mounting options.

Handles (jump ropes or PVC)


Cost:

AL = $6
Mounting hardware = $5
Handles = ($7 at walmart, $10 at target)

My total = $21 (I only used a little bit of the AL, so really I only used about $2 worth, but you can't buy just a small $2 piece unfortunately). Time was about half an hour or so.

I think you can get something similar for around $60 (ultralight tray). I think it's a pretty good value, considering you get the ball mounts with it for that price (I think).

So this is what you do:

Establish your 16:9 ratio. In my case my handles were 5 3/4" (height) so my width needed to be approx 10 3/16" to achieve the proper ratio.

Next you need to center the lense of the gopro (not the gopro itself) inbetween the width of the tray and the height of the handles. In my case this came to be about 2 7/8" from the tray and 5" from the handle. If you set it up like this, your tray/handles becomes a crude viewfinder.

Ok, so you've figured out your measurements. Now mark your AL and drill. The mounting holes in the jump ropes are 1/4", so drill 1/4" holes in each end of the tray and mount your handles using 1/4" bolts and 1/4" lock nuts (you can also use eyebolts here to give you something to clip into - but it is just as easy to drill an extra "clip" hole into the tray for that purpose). The handles are two pieces, the handle grip section and the base. The grip section screws into the base, so unscrew the handles, mount the base, then screw the handles back in.

Drill your center hole for the camera. You can use the GoPro tripod mount and a piece of 1" PVC cut to the proper width to act as a space to achieve the proper centered height, or you can take the gopro mount that you see in my picture, and drill a hole into it and then mount it to the tray (this hole is smaller than 1/4" don't remember exact diameter off the top though). I did it this way because it just happened to be the exact height I needed. The mount is still usable if I remove it from the tray. If you go with the gopro tripod mount, the mount uses a 1/4" bolt, so you will need to add that to the parts list.

You could use PVC for the handles instead. It will save you a few bucks, but the cool thing with the jump rope handles is that since they unscrew, you can break the tray down for your luggage, etc, and you can store things in it.

Looks nice. I bought my aluminum pre-drilled from Lowes.

That's cool. I didn't realize you could get it pre drilled.
 
I'm guessing so the handles don't show in the vid?
 
I'm guessing to use the handles to frame the video? IIRC most gopro's don't have a screen.
 
Looks good. I just took some aluminum stays out of a backpack I'm converting for backplate usage. Now I know what to do with my stays...
 
The 16:9 is so the handles / tray act like a crude view finder. I ended up shortening the tray length because I picked up an lcd bacpac so I no longer need a crude viewfinder.
