My wife and I just returned from Laguna Beach Resort. It was our 14th trip to the Bay Islands, 4th time we stayed on Utila, 3rd time we stayed at LBR. By far it was the worst weather we had on any of our trips. It was cold, windy and rainy, the visibility was way down on most dives (it was great on the north side, got five dives there) It was a still a great trip. Of course, the resort or we can’t control the weather.

As usual getting to Utila is half the fun. Of the twelve people that stayed at the resort last week my wife and I were the only ones that got to there on Saturday. Two groups of two got stuck in San Pedro Sula. One group took a cab to La Ceiba on Sunday and even though the airport on Utila was officially closed they found someone that was flying over anyway and hitched a ride with him. The other couple waited until Monday flew when the airport opened. Another couple made it to Roatan but was unable get to Utila until Monday morning. A group of four guys almost made it to Roatan but got diverted to Cancun. They did not make it until Monday afternoon. The resort made sure they were well cared for until they made to the resort.

LBR is a very enjoyable place to stay. It has a unique set up. It is fairly isolated but close to town so side trips to town are easy to arrange and it only takes a few minutes to get there. The individual and duplex bungalows are on the water along the lagoon. They each have a dock over the lagoon. The food is served buffet style and it was very good. They offer three boat dives per day, a drop off dive after the afternoon dive, two night dives and unlimited shore diving. Due to the weather we only did one drop off dive and skipped the night dives. We did all the boat dives. The dive crew, DM and boat captain, are very good. They help you if you need it or want it and stay out of your way when you don’t. The only complaint is they limit your dive to one hour. I routinely got out of the water with 1200 lbs or more of air in my tank.

Due to the rains, the visibility was not as good as previous trips. The diving was still good. The fish life seemed down from the last time we were there. With the lack of sunshine and rough water we did not look for whale sharks. We did the Haliburton wreck for our first time. It is a very nice dive. Due to the low light and particles in the water finding small stuff was hard. We did find about five or six sea horses during the week, arrow crabs, banded coral shrimp, cleaner shrimp and more of the easy to find stuff. We saw a few turtles, stingrays, and eagle rays.

During one surface interval, we came upon a large pod of dolphins. The boat captain made a great drop for the divers with their snorkel gear to swim with the dolphins.

In spite of the weather it was a very good vacation and week of diving.

LBR is one of our favorites on Utila, been there more than a dozen times, got married on the beach at LBR by the town's mayor. A trip to LBR is like going home for us. Capt Wag and Capt Kerry never let us down and almost got us to Cayos Cochinos one trip...but that is another story. Troy and Edith, the owners are always there for the guests too. They have managed to get us back to Roatan when others were stranded by weather.
