Stop Shark Finning!!!

That video made me sick to my stomach. I have seen a lot of gruesome things, but that is just rediculous.

How would you make shark fins worthless?

That is the daunting task :depressed:

You either have to make the fins worth less or the value of a live and living shark worth more...

I think that most SB members' personal beliefs and values place high marks on living sharks, in other cultures they are a means of subsistance feeding other persons with "different" personal beliefs and values.

No easy task here.

Totally cruel...stop shark finning!!

What a powerful 45 seconds. Unfortunately posting it here is preaching to the choir. Unless the demand is reduced or eliminated finning will continue.

I know but maybe somebody here knows dive shops, instructors etc in Asia and can share it with them. What's needed is another Cultural Revolution! I bet that's not going to happen any time soon either... Maybe getting involved the local movie, sport and pop stars? The Earth Island Institute decided to pay a large sum of money to fishermen living in one of the Solomon Islands so they would not hunt dolphins. Well things went really bad when the fishermen did not receive the money. They began to kill hundreds of dolphins in retaliation. Apparently the money was taken by other locals living on a different island and they never gave it to the folks that were supposed to have it.

This story tells you that environmental organizations etc...have to come up with a better and more comprehensive plan to create small macro-economies that meet the local population needs and convince them that killing sharks to extinction is counterproductive for all of us.

the above post is the problem with "organizations" in general.
While these organizations have the best intentions at heart, but actually creates a larger problem.
My friend is a cosmetic surgeon that went to Haiti to do free cosmetic surgery for a month (cleft palates, disfigurements, etc)...

He was amazed how little of the food and other assistance made it to the people that needed it most.

He saw food deliveries taken by militia and it was used as a tool to oppress the people.... disagree with us and you starve.....

he also told about how much money was diverted into the pockets of the powerful there. They had a house that the relief organization had rented for them ( his wife is a nurse that went to help also). He said it was a modest house at best.... $30,000.00 per month for the organization to rent it.... yes, $30,000.00....

I said all this to put into perspective the daunting task of problems like this.... I am also sickened by these actions. I plead to groups that send money, etc to help reduce the problem closely monitor the money, as it could backfire and make the problem worse as in the case of the dolphin massacre and the Haiti rebels.
