I used to get 1-2 sinus infections per year, usually resulting in taking antibiotics. I finally had a doctor suggest that I do a salt water rinse. She also prescribed Flonase and suggested that I use it for a couple days whenever I noticed the initial symptoms of a sinus infection. Since I started following that advice I have not had a single sinus infection in the last couple years.

Awesome! I'm off my Singular. Didn't think it made much difference, but maybe it did, and maybe we have some extra pollen.. been sniffling lately. As long as I remember to rinse I am good.

If you go diving or swim in a pool, you are putting worse stuff up your nose. When you dive you get water in your nose, ears and other places. Why is no one talking about the municipal water source being unsafe? There was a case last year where a couple of people died due to unsafe municipal water. If they don't fix that issue before summer children swimming in kiddie pools will die from the same thing.

Woah, USBB, hold your horses! I didn't say I agreed with it, I just thought it was an interesting premise -- especially given this thread.

(And, yes, I only use distilled water in my Neti Pot.)

I always take a sniff or snort, or whatever you may want to call it, of salt water (make sure you put some in your palm and check that its clean and clear of any debris before you do it) before I dive.
It kind of burns your nostrils but it only lasts a few seconds. Wash it with a little of bottled water and it will go away. :D
Then I blow my nose a couple of times and voila!! Its all clear. It makes equalizing easier too (at least for me).
If I feel like there is more I might repeat it one more time.

I also do this whenever I go to the beach for a swim so that I clear my nose more often (preventative maintenance ).

It gets really hot in the summer where I live and the use of Air conditioning is a must. Unfortunately this causes my nose to "block'.
Salt water is a good way to address this issue.

Hope all goes well!!!!

I never use plain water, as that really burns, but a mixture of canning salts or the commercial nasal rinse salts clears my sinuses without that burning feeling at all.

Always, always , always use distilled water. Never ever use tap water unless you boil it first and let it cool down. I use the Neil Med bottle myself and it works great for me. I got a box of premixed packets from Neil Med and they make it a lot easier to mix.

Instructor trick: if you get congested on a dive, then lift your mask, snort sea water, and then blow your nose. After which you can equalize and also avoid reverse squeeze.

How healthy that is... I'm not so sure, but I have used it while working.

I looked at the cost of the premade packets and decided to do the DIY version. About 1/100 the cost too.. Mix equal parts of baking soda and sea salt, making sure it does not have any iodine or anything else in it. I use a 1/4 teaspoon mix.
Yeah, I use tap water.. bad me..

Note- Best done at the surface :D
