The same thing happened to me on my Hog reg. I asked DRIS about this and heard I should bring the reg to an LDS. (BTW I'm a huge DRIS fan. I didn't even remember this until now.)

My email:

"I purchased a HOG reg from you guys to use as my octo and I didn't like it. The purge somehow got stuck open on a dive and I wound up breathing in some water. Can I return it? (The B2 is a replacement for that)."

The answer:

"I apologize, but we are unable to take the Hog Regulator back as it has been too long since you purchased it. I would suggest you take that regulator to your local dive shop to have it adjusted. It will work just fine for you then."

I always purge first and I've never breathed water on my Atomic regs. Never. But the Hog has stuck open more than once.

That could kill a diver. I would NOT use a reg that was prone to that.

HI Peter, it looks like your regs were bought a little over a year ago. When did we get this email? I looked in our system, and can't find this email from you anywhere. Since you quoted it, I'm assuming you have access to it. Can you please email it to me so I can see who wrote it? This is NOT a typical response from DRIS, nor should an email have gone out that said anything even close to that, and I want to get to the bottom of it ASAP. You can email me at mike@diverightinscuba.com

I, too, am experiencing problems with my HOG reg set I purchased from Dive Gear Express a couple of months ago and will be contacting them today or tomorrow. The first problem I noticed immediately on the first dive was that the reg breathes wet when I look upward. But I was planning to ignore that until the first service interval. However, the second problem cropped up just this past weekend: the high pressure hose started emitting bubbles all along its length, making an impressive curtain or Christmas tree of bubbles for my buddies to rib me about. I was told this can happen when the tiny perforations along the length of the hose that are left by a manufacturing machine that grips the hose are too deep. This was on the 10th dive after purchase.

Lorenzoid,

I would contact DGE about the reg. As for the hose, ALL hoses have perforations in their rubber, outer shell. This can do 2 things.
1- it's just a protective sheath, so air could get trapped in it and come out after a little bit on a dive.
2- These are there to also be an indicator. If the hose is bad, the entire hose will have bubbles coming out of it in a steady stream. That way, you can miss that there is a problem with the hose.

So, it depends on what happened, and if the leaking stopped...did it?

Can those with HOG reg issues let the rest of us know which model you have? If it is mentioned here already somewhere, I apologize. I have been following this thread since hub and I just purchased HOG regs, as well. I have about 20 dives on mine so far.

It leaked a curtain of bubbles along the length of the HP hose the entire 49 minutes of the dive. But this did not happen for the first eight or so dives. So it apparently just failed at some point. That's very interesting about the perforations in the outer sheath actually having a useful function--thanks for enlightening me.

It's a D1 first stage and Classic second stage.

I have not lost faith in HOG by any means, as they have many fans here on SB.

The only issues that I have with my hog fleet has been with the Hp seats. Other than that good maintenance and cleaning will keep them happy and reliable :)
I would always recommend the coldwater version as the environmental seal keeps a lot of crud out of the 1st stage.
I'm running about 9 in heavy use anywhere from Tech to cave s and have yet to have a failure out performance drop not of my own accord.
Of course I'm anxiously awaiting the new improved service kits but I will always continue to pre breathe all regs under water predive when possible.

If the purge button is sticking is is always caused by sand or dirt getting behind the purge button. This is common to all hard purge button style regulatora.

That could kill a diver. I would NOT use a reg that was prone to that.

For #1, my octo from DRIS free flowed a little when I got it. A quick detune fixed it but I did wonder if this should have got caught when it was assembled.

Yup, I'm with you on that.

For #2, I try to always remember to do a vacuum test as part of my predive assembly / inspection checklist. I've had my exhaust flaps fold back more then once and I don't know why they would be doing that.
.

That seems alot to do for each dive. But maybe I should start doing so. I wonder of the HOG D1 reg has a greater propensity to do that than do other regs. Anyone have any ideas about that?

I interpreted to mean that the purge valve was stuck open allowing him to breath water. If the button was stuck in the freeflow position, that shouldn't cause aspiration of water and shouldn't be hard to fix.

A vacuum test should be done before each use, it takes 3 seconds... I try to remember to do it. Usually check when done rinsing my gear too and before putting away.
