People differ.

"We're on vacation- we don't want to get up at 6am" and in the same breath: "Why do you only offer 3 dives a day?" is fairly common in this industry.

To make more dives during the day (and arguably the 'best' dives), you need to hit the water within an hour of dawn. That means getting up before dawn. The majority of people 'on vacation' do not like this. They sign up for dawn dives, but half cancel (no-shows), and get uppity for being charged anyway.

Most operators cater for the masses, and the masses have spoken.

Individual op's catering for a specific 'breed' of divers, operate on the 'fish-clock'. This clock is related to the differences in light through the day.

Why do most dive operators push 2 am dives in Cozumel while the rest of the land based opns throughout the Carib and for that matter south pacific do 3 or more with their dive packages?? Is it travel logistics, compressor or tank availability, weather, lack of piers, minimal shore diving? I am guessing it has to do with overhead $'s.

I haven't read all of the other responses, - just a few on the first page - but the reason is:

Two-tank morning dives are the standard and what MOST people want. Afternoon dives are ancillary and can be added on by request with enough divers - that's the bottom line.

Chances of adding a third dive to the morning trip or adding an afternoon two-tank trip are greater the closer to town you are staying or if you are willing to taxi to the caleta - this is for logistical reasons as well as economical if they are running the afternoon boat for only 2 or 3 people.

I know the resort ops offer their dives as individual dives so have morning and afternoon trips - but that in of itself is another trade-off. Other ops offer a single 3rd tank in the afternoon - but it's ALWAYS to Paradise and you have to meet the boat in town or at Villa Blanca pier.

Communication and asking for what you want from your dive op(s) is the key! Every option is not necessarily on the websites - those are just the standard, most common packages!

Well, you know, Sup, if you were running an op that REALLY catered to divers, you would have arrange to have dawn come a little later in the morning.....

You are so getting water-boarded the next time you step off the plane....
I practically got waterboarded on my last trip. Dog sniffed my carry-on, then my bags were x-rayed, and my camera bag was hand-searched even though I got the green light.

What is up with the red/green light if they ignore the result?

I believe the new service at Aldora includes having someone come to your room and change the alarm clock so it appears like you're getting up later :)

Well said. I love getting up well before the sun comes up, get some java and take a kayak out for a nice paddle and watch the sunrise and the huge cruise ships coming in, or how about a long bike ride before breakfast down south and back.

If you weren't already an old guy I would say that kinda crap might make you die young.....

Totally agree. There's something wrong with getting up before the sun does. According to Greek mythology at least, getting up before the sun would mean putting yourself before a God and that's blasphemy.

Damn...another reason I'm going to hell..... sigh...

I think Coz is oriented towards two dives per day, not that you can't dive more often though. A few possible reasons:

Nitrox. Yes it's available but it is not pushed by the ops and it seems like 90% or more divers just use air.

Non-divers. Cozumel has other things to do that it's a great place for divers to bring their non-diving friends and family. In this case, they may not be in dive-dive-dive mode but wanting to do a few dives then spend some time with them.
