It seems there is a larger preference for the DS4 over the XTX50 first stage. Does anyone care to expand on this (I was shopping for a set of DS4's for a doubles set up but came across a set of XTX50's at a lower price).

Hi jahouck,
Actually there is a larger preference for the XTX50 (DST) first stage. DST being anacronym for Dry-Sealed w/ Turret. The turret is a convenience feature leading to optimum hose routings.

There is a school of thought in the technical community that the turret, with its dynamic o-ring is a potential failure point. While this has not proved to be an issue, some have opted to take the same regulator without the swivel turret, thus you have the XTX50/DS4. Because it is primarily embraced by technical divers, it is only offered with a din connector in the USA.

The regulators are essentially the same with the only difference being the turret.

The XTX50 1st stage is, as far as I know, just a DST with an Apeks logo etched onto it. So between it and the DS4, it just depends on whether you want a turret reg or not. For doubles' hoses, in addition to the swivels being failure points, some find the shorter DS4 regs route better.

You can attach a 5th port into the turret(DST) and make the hose routing even better(same as MK25). Not sure if this also apply to UST though!
BTW, MK25 also has swivel turret!

DST with the 5th port is ideal for sidemount configuration. Perfect routing and the turret makes stowing and deploying the hoses easier.

deleted due to my understanding being wrong about dry sealing on the DS4

XTX50 is the 2nd stage.....DS4 is the short non-turret 1st stage and DST is the 1st stage w/turret.....I've got two DS4's and 2 XTX50's for sale.........You can add a fifth port (on top) to a DST.......And I've never had any problems w/a DST, use to use them on my cave doubles.......But HOG comes w/a fifth port already and whereas the DS4 only has 1 HP port, the HOG D1 has two.....More options when routing hoses........PM me if your interested in the DS4's/XTX50's....All four have been rebuilt and tested........

A UST is "unsealed" DST so it should apply.
